2013年甘比亞與我國斷交，之後在2016年轉與中共建交。今天甘比亞總統巴羅（Adama Barrow）在北京和中國國家主席習近平會面，沒想到巴羅竟然在會面時表示，過去甘比亞和台灣保持所謂「外交關係」是巨大錯誤。

巴羅近日為參與中非合作論壇會議飛到北京，習近平對於甘比亞首次出席會議表示，這對中甘關係、中非關係、論壇建設均具有重要意義，更讚賞巴羅和甘比亞政府堅持「一個中國」原則，並願意和甘比亞繼續把握雙方關係的大方向，繼續在涉及彼此核心利益和重大關切的問題互相支持。習近平更指出，中國願意支持甘比亞政府建設「新甘比亞」，願意加強各種合作，支持甘比亞加強和平安全能力的建設。
巴羅則表示，非洲國家元首和政府領導人幾乎全數出席北京風會，充分彰顯了對中國和非中關係的高度重視，巴羅說，甘比亞很高興回到中非合作的大家庭，也很滿意甘中復交以來兩國的合作迅速取得成效，巴羅指出，中國幫他們改善通訊、道路、交通條件，這些都是過去多年來，甘比亞政府想做卻做不到的事。
巴羅還說，事實證明，過去甘比亞同台灣保持所謂「外交關係」是巨大的錯誤，更強調甘比亞將義無反顧奉行一中政策，致力於鞏固和中國互利互贏的夥伴關係，巴羅稱：「這完全符合甘比亞人民的意願。」而在甘比亞和中共領導人會面後，兩國元首共同見證、簽署雙邊合作文件。
而過去台灣金援甘比亞，外交部大約一年就編3億元預算，包括幫他們蓋軍事訓練中心，捐贈快艇，還有農耕援助等等，甚至還借超過3億台幣給甘比亞，至今仍是呆帳，沒想到甘比亞總統如今卻翻臉不認人。
