And Sour The Relationship ?

I beg to differ. If you understand what a Zhou was, especially what Jingzhou was in ancient China, made up of nine Zhous only. Jiangdong as held by Sun Quan as State of Wu wasn't even a recognized Zhou in ancient China yet, just a peripheral subordinate. Holding Jingzhou would block in between Jiangdong and Liu Bei expansion to Yizhou as State of Shu. Modern equivalent to a Zhou would be a Province, roughly, but without the autonomous political and military powers, except Taiwan.

But, we hate to see the sour relationship because that means Cao Wei ganging up with Sun's Dong Wu to attack from two fronts and ending up Zhang Fei and Guang Yu being killed in battlefields. The two loses had badly reflected on ZhuGe's ability to manage an effective diplomacy and strategic plan to grow. He should have let go of that disputed small piece of land as a 'friendly gesture' to buy time. He should try to do a balancing act to tame Dong Wu and not to let Sun to have a chance to befriend Shu Han's eternal enemy, Wei.

Zhang Fei was killed in bed by soldiers he abused and turned traitors. Guan Yu was captured in battlefield for not following Zhuge Liang advice and got lured out of Jingzhou. For refusing to surrender and submit after capture, he got beheaded and his legendary reputation for loyalty. Jingzhou was important to Zhuge Liang because the buffer ensured that he could attack Wei without worrying about Wu. A conclusive victory over Wei would subdue Wu automatically. Wu couldn't attack Shu or Wei as long as Jingzhou was held steady. It only had to wait to see who, Shu or Wei won. However, it was Zhang Fei and Guan Yu who failed Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei, not the other way around. Anyway in the end, all lost. Sima family ursurped Cao family and won all as Jin dynasty.

Guan Yu was the only qualified naval commander to be place in one of the vital area where Cao Cao's general had lost. It was Sun Quan's men that cause Guan Yu's rout and to retrieve back their lost ground which was under dispute.

He was betrayed by his two generals and he had to further retreat to meet Liu Bei but was cut short. He was beheaded.

Liu Bei's anger was so great that ZhuGe had to 'let go'. I still think that ZhuGe had not done enough to appease Sun Quan in the first place.
