New Delhi: Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde was killed in a car accident today morning.

64-year-old Munde was on his way to airport when his car was hit by another vehicle at around 6:30 a.m. at Prithviraj road-Tughlak road roundabout in the heart of the capital.

He was rushed to the AIIMS trauma centre, by his driver and personal assistant, where doctors declared him dead around 7:50, said Union Minster Nitin Gadkari.
*
Though Munde did not suffer any injuries, apart from some minor aberrations on the nose, he apparently suffered a shock in the impact of accident.

Munde asked for water from his security guard Nair who was sitting in front of the car and told him to take him to the hospital.
*
His last rites will be performed in his native village in Maharashtra tomorrow, Gadkari informed the media.
*
Refusing to give an exact cause of death, Health Minister Dr Harshvardhan said that it will be determined on after an autopsy.

The driver of the Indica has reportedly been taken into custody by the police.
*
Munde had only last night attended a meeting of the Union Council of Ministers called by the Prime Minister and was proceeding to Mumbai for work when the accident occurred.
*
He is survived by his wife and three daughters, one of whom is an MLA from Parli in Maharashtra's Beed district.
*
A brother-in-law of slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, Munde hailed from a poor family in the backward Marathwada region and was brought into politics by the late BJP leader Vasantrao Bhagwat, who also groomed several other leaders including Pramod Mahajan.
*
He played a crucial role in cobbling alliance of the RPI, Swabhimani Shetkari Paksh and Rashtriya Samaj Paksh with the Shiv Sena-BJP in the state.
*
Munde was recently caught in a row over his educational qualifications with Congress alleging that he "graduated" in 1976 from a college established in 1978.
*
Condoling his death, Prime Minister Modi said he was extremely saddened and shocked by demise of "my friend" Munde.
*
As a mark of respect to Munde, the national flag is being flown at half mast in Delhi, state capitals and Union Territories today.
*
Health Minister Harsh Vardhan, who was the first to reach AIIMS, said doctors tried their best to revive him.
*
Union Highways and Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, who was also there at the hospital, said Munde will be cremated in his native village in Beed in Maharashtra tomorrow.

Gopinath Munde, India’s rural development minister and a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet, died after an accident today as he traveled to New Delhi’s airport. He was 64.

Munde died at 8 a.m. at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, 1½ hours after his car was struck by another vehicle, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari told reporters outside the hospital. Munde had a heart attack after the collision, although the exact cause of death will be known only after an autopsy, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said.

“My tributes to a dynamic leader whose premature demise leaves a void hard to fill,” Modi said on his Twitter account.

Munde, from Beed in the western state of Maharashtra, was sworn in on May 26 after the Bharatiya Janata Party under Modi swept to power in India’s general election. Modi is due to pay his last respects later today, Gadkari said.

“Munde was a committed leader to the progress of this country,” Gadkari said in New Delhi. “For his family, for the BJP and for the country, this is a tremendous loss.”

Munde was born into poverty in 1949 to farmers in a district known for its long stretches of drought. He grew to become the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra in 1995 before becoming a member of parliament in 2009.

Opposing Gandhi

After spending time with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the Hindu nationalist group aligned with the BJP, Munde entered politics as a member of the opposition to Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975 when she suspended India’s constitution. Pramod Mahajan, his brother-in-law and a leader of the opposition at the time, brought Munde into the movement before they were arrested and jailed for protesting Gandhi’s rule.

“The 16 months of imprisonment in the central jail was a turning point in my life,” he wrote on his website. “I was more determined than ever to work ceaselessly to overthrow the political system that was oppressive and corrupt.”

Munde won a seat in the Maharashtra state assembly in 1978, his first electoral victory, before being made party secretary in the state in 1982 and then president in 1986.

After four years as Maharashtra’s chief minister, Munde won his first national election in 2009.

Munde retained his seat in elections that ended on May 16 by a margin of 200,000 votes before joining Modi’s cabinet.

He is survived by his wife Pradnya, shown on Indian television being carried into the hospital by her family, and three daughters.
