Navy serviceman Jason Chee

SINGAPORE: Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) serviceman Jason Chee has lost both his legs and his left hand, following an accident on board the Landing Ship Tank RSS Endeavour.

This is according to a family member of Mr Chee.

Mr Chee, who is a regular serviceman, was injured on Monday after he got caught between a motorised winch and a rope on the RSS Endeavour.

Mr Chee remains in the intensive care unit.

His elderly father is extremely shaken by the news and is currently being taken care of by relatives, according to the husband of Jason's cousin, Mr Danny Boey.

Mr Boey says Jason is the family's only child and sole breadwinner.

The serviceman had also recently lost his mother.

SINGAPORE: Preliminary findings indicate equipment malfunction could have led to the incident that left a navy serviceman critically injured.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) in an update late Tuesday night said Weapon Systems Supervisor Jason Chee Weng Fai remains in critical condition.

He's warded at the Changi General Hospital.

Channel NewsAsia understands that Mr Chee is expected to be in the Intensive Care Unit for a few days.

The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) declared a 48-hour safety time-out from 10 Dec for its Frigates, Missile Corvettes and Landing Ship Tanks.

MINDEF said the safety time-out will allow the RSN to review its operating and safety procedures.

The Military Expert was injured on Monday when he got caught between a motorised winch and a rope, on the Landing Ship Tank, RSS Endeavour.

He was checking on a berthing rope that was being tightened when the incident happened.

If he was a good looking chap every single day people would make efforts to assist him. There would also be efforts to collect donations for him on a dedicated facebook page etc.

Sadly, this is the nature of a society enraptured by looks.

Hope Mindef leads the efforts to get him the best medical care and the required compensation.

The country should be able to raise an equal or greater amount than that raised for the Thai girl who fell on the MRT track. These are accidents. And this young man lost his limbs in the service of his country. The other one is trying to sue SMRT. For her own mistake.

equipment malfunction? more like no one press the emergency stop button or don't know how to or where to. winch is just a simple motorised equipment. only 3 movements, clockwise, anticlockwise and neutral. what malfunction? pian gina?

something is really fucking wrong here? if the winch is in operation, why would the victim go near to check the mooring ropes? mooring ropes should be check before or after the vessel is berthed not when the winches are in operation.

my guess is someone started the winches without realising the victim is checking the ropes. victim got caught in the ropes and pulled into the winch. anyway the mooring ropes supposed to be arranged in a way that there is no way a person can get caught during berthing unless the fellow want to commit suicide.

paiseh to say, limpeh cannot accept mindef explaination.

He is still in intensive care, so monetary donation is not appropriate yet. He had asked for blood donation of O type blood and later when the press takes photos of him without his limbs and one hand, I believe the monetary donation will come in. He's pretty nice looking, a bit looking chubby and if the press mention he's the sole bread-winner, the donation would come in.

If he's covered by insurance, this is Total and Permanent Disability and he can claim. SAF also owes him compensation and if the preliminary findings is machine malfunction, then he can file civil suit even though he's in the military, I think. Wish him well and get out of intensive care and recover well. SAD.
