I had a friend who subscribed to Teleview for a while. It was expensive like S$30 or so for such limited contents. However, it was quite a novelty for those who could afford it. I figure it was more of dial-up intranet than real internet. The server had access to the real internet pages and the user accessed those pages through the intranet server. No, there wasn't e-mail.

In the mid 90s, SingNet and PacNet were the two first real full ISP. StarHub joined in a little later. M1 only joined in mid 2000s with broadband.

Then came Cyberway...I was a PacNet user, I signed up for Cyberway the first day the started & went to test their broadband as a tester & since then I am still using them under Starhub...

Yes, it was S$30 p.m. flat for basic package, to add extra features pay some more. However there no time limit as far as I recall, because those years phoneline charges were p.m. flat unlimited too. It was after the introduction of SingNet full-scale ISP dial-up that SingTel changed the phoneline charges to basic plus time based.

I think I still have the teleview coloured brochure sonewhere in my junk box...

The interesting thing about accessing the internet from the work place is that it is not censored. Can connect to all sites including those censored ones.

Workplace connections (in big corporations) are usually based on close-circuit wired intranet server independent of the main ISP public proxy. However, the infosys admin can block anything as the CEO or other superior authority instructs too, even free e-mail sites like Yahoo Mail or Hotmail Mail, and free forums and chatsites known to waste employees' time on private matters and pursuits during office hours. Usually these are the concerns at the offices. They're not really concerned about porn or YouTube. These are glaringly obvious, easily spotted and caught. Only idiots and maniacs surf those during office hours. They should be caught and sacked.

I'll always remember that Olivetti. It was a birthday gift from my uncle. It came with a nice casing and a very good learner's manual. Those days of oiling and cleaning the typecase and changing ribbons were fun. There were only two boys in the entire block who had personal typewriters, me and my friend. The other ah beng boys were simply amazed and in awe.

Nowadays, we type on computer keyboards effortlessly. To use a typewriter, it's not only knowing QWERTY but also finger strength required, especially tough training the little finger for the side keys. :(

The noise it made was classic click click clack clack and return carriage cling not heard nowadays anymore. Hearing that noise meant you're passing by an office or the room of some England powder in those days.

Yah my type writers mechanical & electrical ones had already been covered in dust for many years when I was still NSF, and yet in my SAF unit we still use many of them daily, especially to type the daily RO (routine orders) & letters. KNN! Damn 1st world! However those days the PAP were still not so egoistic and dishonest - they never brag as much shit as these days. The old days of PAp were still reasonably humble, so they did provoke me to fuck them so much in those days.

More urgent matters those days in SAF were sent instead of by letters, went by Telex.

I have the suspicion that in near future computers will entirely have no keyboards nor mouse. All touch screens. Voice commands may also become quite common very soon.


These input devices will become show pieces in technological museums!

..... Over the years, luckily hardware keeps dropping in price. But somehow software never drops in price. If not for software piracy, many people today will still be computer illiterate.

Nobody seems to complain that American Bill Gate ripped us off to become a multi-billionaire. If there is no piracy, billion of people in the Third World will be computer illiterate.

Initially, this will be an air cooled computer. However, as one can see from the attached pictures, I have left plenty of room for a water cooled setup once I overcome my trepidation with assembling something like that. So, without further ado -
