Anybody got pictures of the old RI at Bras Basah Rd and the Stamford Canal? Lots of passers-by would stop and watch perhaps a rugby game in progress or a softball game.

Used to look out the windows of my class at the Nicoll Hwy to wait for the lights to change. Those days, the middle carriageway was controlled by traffic lights so as to open to allow 4 more lanes to carry vehicles going into the city during morning peak hrs amd then to switch directions after 12pm to let vehicles clear from the city faster. The lights were manually controlled and traffic policemen had to be at both ends of NH to open and close the booms. Not as high tech as now.

My mischiveious friend, would stand outside the Archbishop house on the Catherdral's ground & shout "MICHAEL"... ha ha ha ha

Talking about this corner...there was a bakery that bakes good Hot Cross Buns for Easter... :p

Was the United States Information Service (USIS) at the top level of MPH Stmaford?. Do not recall seeing it there?. All I remember is going in at the entrance of the US Embassy, show them the USIS membership card....

I think Brit Council remained at Clifford Centre for a while before they moved off... that was some years back....

Used to go to MPH before it was permanently closed on weekends & that's when I noticed the USIS which was at the top floor of MPH.

The embassy had already moved to its new premises. It made sense to have a place thats more accessible without all the unecessary security.

Only went to clifford centre when I had to visit Isaacs, as a student that area it held few attractions.

Yep, started going there when they were located at the original arcade, & continued going there in the new location.

Ms Ong the opthamologist passed away last year :(

Surprised that Ah Meng survived so long. All those hardware stores must be facing high rents.

Is the daugther still beautiful  Don't see many beautiful girls nowadays. :o

Maybe the Ah Meng store is a front for syndicate money? I've seen some stores in Sim Lim who have been around for years but do little business.

Don't remember Star Optical. If they are in Specialists centre then they have competition from Isaac Jr who has an shop there. Specialist Cte another victim of progress :(

Used to go to places like Pin Pin(now in Funan) but back then when they were across from Odeon Theatre their level of service wasn't stable. Isaac is pricier but the person doing the checking is an opthamologist & they do provide quality service. Isaac is really good if you need contacts because they'll get you to do repeated visits until you get a good fit

Another icon of yesteryears ..... where the national day rallies were held in the 70s, University of Singapore Graduates & Singapore Poly graduates held their graduation convocation here .... families take photos at the iconic fountain, then visit Van Kleef Aquarium ..... dismantled in 1985 supposedly due to structural risks ... plot left empty to this day .....

His daughter is...va va room..OK!...by now a middle age lady!!

In my school days in my youth, I can say i have been to a Drive-In cinema .... Opened in 1971, the Jurong Drive-In Cinema was sited at the Tang Dynasty Village which itself has disappeared & the land is now empty lying next to AYE near Wet n Wild & Fairways Country Club....
Youths of today, you don't know what a drive-in movie experience is like hee hee

Salute you .... true Bands ticket-paying supporter !
I only attend the HK singers & celeb stars concerts .....
I think 'Ah Chan' of TVB 'Brothers' fame came to perform here with Chow Yuen Fatt and gang beofre :p

As for the pak tor at Fort Canning ... dim lights, bushes, trees & hill slopes, good for raba and also for those 'dia-kows' 'catch-monkeys' voyeurs .... then in the car parks, can see many disposable condoms, saw my first one there

No other similar architectural icons - an open-air cantilever theatre - can be found in 21st century Singapore today .... what a bloody irony !:oIo:

It was $3 or $2 or something I forgot...mostly in the afternoons the UNKNOWN LOCAL BANDS back then...the national theatre gave them exposure...sometimes quite disheartening to an audience of 10...psst sometimes I get in free...

As for the rest of concerts, it was night time affair...one have to PAY!!..I remember Chow Yuen Fatt & Ah Chan....

there were just too many, Chinese Orchestra, Malay ensemble..Indian ensemble....I just absorbed....ha ha ha ha

it was a CULTURAL EXPERIENCE...

Not related to this thread.

I am suggesting some old uncle or young auntie here can start another similar thread devoted to everyday objects and things of past eras. Our young ones will then have a field day outing here. Howsabout it?

Recently saw a very old Malay movie with Dick Cavert acting as a magician:smile:
