the thing said about schooling nowadays is that " not all graduates will be successful in life and not all school drop outs will be useless"...:(:o

i 'd think the best armour in life is self learning both from books and on the streets...:o

Wat is probably more disturbing is the fact that he's only 34.His 'employability' will certainly diminish as he gets older. I think he knows that the longer he's out of work, the harder it will be to land one. Sad....

I suspect the chap applied for the wrong jobs. If you graduate in engineering and apply for 100 accountancy jobs, even as an accounts clerk, how to get it? And if you apply as cleaner and people see your Masters degree, they will think you are mad. No cleaning employer wants to take in a potential IMH patient in case they hurt people with mops and brooms (serious).

Why am I not surprised that a literature grad ended up with the media industry. He should have known.

Maybe he is ugly like the rest of sinkees and the media industry cant afford any more uglies like mark lee and chap cheng the flying duthman.

He should immigrate la. Find his passion overseas like sane sinkees do. Staying here in peesai with a masters degree in Lit only will make him feel shitty being unemployed. That said, I still thinks he have guts to follow what he loves but he is an idiot to do it in peesai.

The successful people I know of do well because they followed their instincts and persevered, and ignored all the so-called well-intended advice lesser mortals were dishing out to them.

My guess is this poor chap was doing what his parents, friends, were telling him to do, apply for all those "conservative" jobs, those iron-rice bowl types, rather than looking at where his talents and potential lie.

if he had followed his instincts, he would have known the media, entertainment, literary, book-writing industry was more applicable.

If you don't follow your passion and talents, doing 'marketable' subjects will only make your more miserable.

For example, a man detest numbers. Forcing him into accountancy or a job which requires daily computation of statistics will be a torture.

Similarly, if you don't like to meet people, give presentations or talk them into purchasing something, you will feel miserable doing sales. So what if the commissions are potentially lucrative?

Too many people just mindlessly follow the crowd, or aim for what is perceived to be the 'right path' in life.

Something is seriously wrong. What happen to his previous working experience? Don't tell me he took that long to complete his MBA. If potential employers reject MBA qualifications, just downgrade to Bachelor degree lah. What's so difficult?

Its his age when he obtained his masters in literature that is the issue. He got it at 32. Generally an honours grad who follows up with his masters in a straight run is aged 27 or 28. Should readily get a job.

He either took a break or started late. If you took a break, you would go for an MBA. As he took it in literature, the assumption by potential employers is that you are aiming for the creative world and unlikely to remain in a job for long if it is not in that space. Alternatively you do not know what you are doing.

I know a lady who did Surveying and finally ended up as a secretary.

Literature? he should apply to to work under you to ditch / dish out advise / advice

I don't need someone with a masters degree for that. Any old idiot who knows the basics of English grammar can do the job perfectly well.

Anything beyond a basic degree is a waste of time. The ROI on a tertiary education is decidedly negative in this day and age unless you're getting a recognised professional qualification from a top notch university.

There's a lot more promise in learning how to write an iphone app. A few good ideas is all it takes to earn a decent living from home.
