Strootman could be the perfect replacement for Nani or Scholes.

Champions League draw

Ronaldo returns to Man United

Manchester United will face Real Madrid in the last-16 of the Champions League, Arsenal will travel to Bayern, while Celtic have been handed a tie against Italian champions Juventus.

The tie of the round sees Cristiano Ronaldo return to his old club for the first time since leaving for £80 million in 2009 - while it will also pit Jose Mourinho against Sir Alex Ferguson, with many considering the Portuguese to be the natural successor to Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo scored 118 goals in 292 appearances for United, but it was another Ronaldo - the Brazilian striker - who took the honours when the clubs last faced each other in 2003, scoring a hat-trick at Old Trafford as Real went through 6-5 on aggregate.

The clubs, who both have a rich history in the competition, first met in the European Cup in April 1957, when Real triumphed 5-3 in the semi-final.

United defender Rio Ferdinand immediately made it clear he was excited at the draw, tweeting: "Oh yes, Madrid!! What a great couple a games that'll be!! @Cristiano see u soon bro!!"

United's club secretary John Alexander hoped there was a lucky omen in the draw. He told Sky Sports News: "Out of several standout ties, I think this is the one. It's the tie that everyone wanted to see - but that nobody wanted to see, they wanted to save it for later in the competition.

"When you think about the traditions of these two clubs they have both been incredibly successful, but of course the past is history. One thing going in our favour is that our one victory over Real Madrid in this competition was in the year we won the final at Wembley [in 1968] so let's hope that is a lucky omen.''

Arsenal, meanwhile, will face last year's runners-up Bayern Munich for a place in the quarter-finals of the competition - while Celtic will face Italian champions Juventus, who helped knocked holders Chelsea out of the competition at the group stage.

Elsewhere in the draw, a glamour tie sees two European heavyweights, AC Milan and Barcelona, go head-to-head for the right to reach the quarter-finals.

In a remarkable coincidence, all eight draws exactly matched those made during Wednesday's rehearsal - with Malaga facing Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk going up against Borussia Dortmund.

The two remaining matches see Galatasaray facing Schalke, while Paris St Germain have been drawn against Spanish side Valencia.

First legs: February 12, 13, 19 and 20
Second legs: March 5, 6, 12 and 13

United play REAL on the 13th of Feb. at the Bernabeu and the return leg on the 5th of March. It's always good to play away on the first leg but this is REAL we're talking about with plenty of quality players and match winners. Our only hope is that REAL implodes with Mourinho leaving on the eve of matchday.

PAUL SCHOLES will quit football next summer — and this time there is no coming back.

The Manchester United legend, 38, has told people close to him this is definitely his final season.

Scholes first retired after the 2010-11 campaign, which saw United win a record 19th title.

He took up a role coaching the reserves but badly missed match days and training with the first team — and believed he still had something to offer.

SunSport exclusively revealed last January that he wanted to return as a player. He made his comeback as a substitute in United’s FA Cup victory over Manchester City on January 8.

Scholes, whose stunning trophy haul includes 10 Premier League crowns, two European Cups and three FA Cups, went on to play a big part as United pulled clear of City in the title race, only to eventually miss out on goal difference.

He was encouraged enough to carry on playing this season but the former England man has started just seven games.

Fellow veteran Ryan Giggs, 39, has also made only seven starts and could follow him into retirement.

Scholes is seen by some as United’s greatest player ever.

Legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Edgar Davids and Xavi have said he is the best midfielder they have faced.

Scholes has made 710 appearances for United since his debut in a League Cup win at Port Vale in 1994.

Pity. I think he can still carry on for another season but Giggs must surely go.

I dun know about thrashing but it's a given that they will be beaten. Madrid is not going to catch Barca in Laliga so Mourinho's and Real's only saving grace will be CL.

Arse will give Bayern a run for their money and may surprise. If it were Dortmund, I'd back them to eliminate Arse. Bayern is full of overpaid and complacent players. The first half of this season has seen them firing on all cylinders but it is only a matter of time before it dips.

Fergie should drop Valencia for the next few games cuz he's just standing over the ball and allowing the opponents to reorganize at the back. I'm just amazed that he was selected to start last night given his horrendous performance in the last game. Rafael would have done a better job at it.

Trade Rooney and Valencia for Ronaldo. Fergie was wrong about Rooney requiring more games to get him up to form especially coming off from an injury. He should just bench this idiot if he doesn't produce the goods.

Man Utd in pole to sign Wilfried Zaha

Manchester United feel they have moved ahead in the race for Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha and are fully confident of signing the forward in the summer, ESPN has learned.

Zaha’s future has been the subject of great speculation lately, with all of United, Arsenal and - to a lesser extent - Tottenham Hotspur chasing the widely admired prospect.

Although Arsenal have long been seen as favourites to eventually secure Zaha’s signature, the player is understood to have had his head turned by United and, particularly, the current position in the table of the two clubs.

The Old Trafford side, meanwhile have further leveraged the situation with some canny negotiating. A key in any transfer is that United are apparently much more willing to let Zaha stay at Selhurst Park until the summer in order to help Palace secure promotion. By contrast, Arsenal have a greater need to reinforce right now.

The situation tallies with the latest comments from Palace chairman Steve Parish on TalkSport, who said Zaha will stay at the club until the summer.

“Right now, we’re concentrating on trying to get out of this league and the best way of doing that is adding to what we’ve got, not losing players,” he said. “I think he will be a Palace player until the summer and then we will look at it. Obviously, we will look at anything that anybody offers us because we would be mad not to.

“If we feel we can move the club forward from doing certain things, then we will. So, never say never. But, right now, we are focused on trying to keep everyone in the squad.”

Should the transfer eventually happen, an Old Trafford source said, it will finally end Nani’s career at the club. Alex Ferguson’s relationship with the Portuguese has reached a low after a series of disagreements in the last year, and United have been open to offers - but only in the event they can bring in sufficient cover.

Had Lucas Moura signed last August, rather than go to Paris Saint-Germain, it would have seen Nani leave. Instead, the Brazilian’s transfer may indirectly lead to Zaha coming to the club this summer.

United, meanwhile, retain a mild interest in Wesley Sneijder, although there has been no movement in the situation. The Inter Milan playmaker’s representatives have contacted a number of clubs - including United - attempting to push a move, explaining the amount of transfer speculation.

ESPN understands that Ferguson would do a deal, but only so long as the price was under £10m and the player's wage demands lessened. As it is, United are prepared to wait and see how the situation develops.

RVP was City's target more than a year ago and Veira did all the work, urging RVP not to renew his contract with Arse. He even assured RVP that City will meet his wage demands. They backed out at the eleventh hour for fear that Arse would report them to the FA. They got away with Nasri the last time.

Imo, unlikely...despite his off form, he's more than a utility player in lineup If it be so, then replacement has to bigger than Roon's shoes:wink:.

Any bets on the BIG 1 this sun?

He's the only player of "value" to the club if they need to raise capital to fund future acquisition, Valencia is the other. Much depends on how well they do in the EPL and CL. My best bet will be that peacock returning to Old Trafford. Even if Perez bump his weekly wages, the on and off the field politics may deter him from signing a new one with REAL. Let's not forget the current contract where the player is fuming over the taxes he has to pay in the final year.

Fergie is an admirer of F. Lampard and I wouldn't be surprise if he plays for United next season. Lamps can provide the experience and leadership in midfield which we're lacking anyway. With nani and Anderson expected to leave, Scholes and Giggs still pending, we may not have enough midfielders to last the 2014 season.

Fergie can have Lampard and Strootman to replace Nani and Anderson in the summer. Strootman is the perfect long term replacement for Scholes. He has great vision and passing ability. Fergie should then decide if he needs Ron or a new keeper. Next season could very well be an exciting one.
