He cheated 13 strangers of a total of $4,240 by spinning false stories of lucrative business deals or about a very ill family member. S. Ravindran Menon, 45, committed these offences between October 2009 and June this year. In between, he molested a student nurse.
On Thursday, he was jailed a total of 14 months for cheating and molestation.
A district court heard that on Oct 13, 2010, the jobless man approached cabby Lee Kuee Seng, 54, claiming to be a former passenger. Menon claimed that a friend from America wanted to hire a taxi for a few hours for $120 a day.
During the drive to Carlton Hotel, Menon borrowed $1,100 from the cabby so as to buy medicine for his friend from Mustafa Shopping Centre. Menon disappeared after going into the store.
