Warning: This article contains details of unsuccessful attempts at voyeuristic recordings. Audience discretion is advised.

A 25-year-old Singaporean student at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) entered a restricted, women-only area of NTU to try and film voyeuristic recordings for money.

He was unsuccessful, and later arrested.

Charge sheets and court documents seen by Mothership stated that How Zhong Ting was a third-year aerospace engineering undergraduate at NTU at the time.

Female-only section

How came across an online advertisement sometime before May 2, 2025, that offered money in return for voyeuristic materials.

He decided to capture such recordings as he had been struggling to pay for his accommodation.

According to court documents, How stayed at NTU's Hall of Residence 14.

It is adjacent to Hall 13, which has a level designated as a female-only section, where only female students staying there are granted access through their key fobs.

How was said to have been aware of this access restriction.

Attempt on May 2, 2025

Sometime before 12:25am on May 2, 2025, How left Hall 14 with his mobile phone and proceeded to the female-only level of Hall 13.

In order to gain access, he walked through a faulty gate which he knew would be malfunctioning, and would allow him to bypass the access restriction.

After How looked around and ensured no one was nearby, he then tried to enter a female toilet to take videos of female students showering using his phone.

However, he could not gain access when he tried to open the toilet doors by pushing the door handle down, as one needed key fob access.

He walked away and returned at 12:26am, where he tried to enter using his own key fob. After not being able to enter again, How left.

How's actions were captured by a CCTV camera facing the toilet.

A campus security officer received a complaint about How's acts and reviewed the footage. He instructed the hall manager of Hall 13 to inspect the toilet, but How had already left by then.

Attempt on May 6, 2025

Later at around 9:16pm on May 6, 2025, How returned to the toilet, again with the intention of capturing voyeuristic materials.

He looked around the area outside the toilet and left, and returned shortly after, before leaving again.

The same campus security officer then received another complaint about How's actions sometime after 9:16pm.

He instructed the hall manager of Hall 13 to head down to the location of the incident.

Court documents stated that How was stopped by the hall manager and admitted to his intention to commit voyeurism.

The campus security officer then called the police and How was arrested at 12:10am on May 7, 2025.

Pleaded guilty

How pleaded guilty on May 29, 2026, to one count each of criminal trespass and attempted voyeurism, CNA reported, adding that another count of criminal trespass will be taken into consideration during sentencing.

CNA reported that District Judge Terence Tay ordered for How to be assessed for a mandatory treatment order (MTO).

It directs offenders who suffer from certain treatable psychiatric conditions to undergo treatment instead of other forms of punishment, according to CNA.

The prosecution did not object to an MTO suitability report being called, as a psychiatric assessment stated that his attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and voyeuristic disorder had contributed to his offences.

CNA reported that How's lawyer also asked for him to be assessed for an MTO, and the judge ordered How to undergo an assessment at the Institute of Mental Health to determine his suitability.

Penalties

How's sentencing will take place on Jul. 15.

CNA reported that for criminal trespass, How may be jailed up to three months, or fined up to S$1,500, or both.

For attempted voyeurism, he could be jailed up to two years, and/or fined, and/or caned.
