MBS employee charged with pocketing $13k worth of chips

A CROUPIER was charged in a district court on Thursday with pocketing $13,000 worth of chips from his employer.

Lim Kim Yeou, 28, a Malaysian, is alleged to have dishonestly converted cash chips totalling $13,000 to his own use at the casino of Marina Bay Sands on Wednesday.

He is also accused of having the chips outside a designated site - in a flat at Whampoa West that evening.

He was remanded at Central police division lock-up for investigation. He will appear in court on Thursday Jan 6.

If convicted of criminal breach of trust, he can be jailed for up to 15 years and fined.

The other offence is punishable with a fine of up to $150,000 or a jail term of up to five years or to both.

Actually it's supposed to be illegal across all casinos to take chips out. Chips are casino currencies that ultimately can be converted to real cash, prone to taking samples outside to counterfeit too. The casino chipmakers are as strictly controlled as legal tender currency mints too.

However, it's quite hard to detect and stop a few gamers from taking a few chips out, usually innocently for souvenir purposes. In any case, counterfeiters would find it easier and more profitable to might as well print forged cash notes. But then again, the principles of caution against counterfeiting and insider smuggling of chips are still there.
 
Don't blame the M'sian. Blame the low pay for his criminal conduct. Afterall, one reason for the high salaries of MIW is to deter corruption. Same should apply to all others.
