The shooting happened around 3 a.m. Sunday during the 24-hour Art All Night, a community cultural event that showcases art, music and food, The Trentonian reported.
Several suspects were shot inside a gallery, and off-duty police returned fire, the news outlet reported.
The individual who died was a 33-year-old male suspect, authorities said.
Trenton police Lt. Darren Zappley said multiple people have been shot and were taken to the hospital, and some are in surgery, describing the scene as "very chaotic."
The annual event, which began at 3 p.m. Saturday, drew more than 30,000 attendees last year, according to organizers.
