Loan sharks show technician no mercy

KUALA LUMPUR: An electrical technician’s desperate bid to finance his ailing mother’s medical bills has landed him in hot water with loan sharks.

Now, Suet Siew Hoong and his family have been forced to move out of their house in Cheras because they were harassed by the ah long.

“It started in January when I needed some money to pay for my mother’s medical bills,” said the 38-year-old.

“I borrowed RM1,000 each from three ah long and managed to pay them back with interest,” he said.

When he needed to pay more medical bills in April, Suet said he had no choice but to resort to borrowing money from the loan sharks again.

“I had borrowed RM2,000 and needed to pay RM280 every three days,” Suet said.

“If I was late, the penalty was RM1,000 per day,” he added.

Suet could not keep up with the penalty payments and his debt grew to RM25,000 despite having already paid RM8,000.

When he could not settle the debts, he said the ah long began harassing him and his family.

“They splashed paint on my house and sent threatening letters to my sister,” he said.

“I had to move out to escape the mental torture.”

Suet was speaking to reporters at MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong’s office in Wisma MCA yesterday.

Following Chong’s advise, Suet lodged a police report.
