"We are not pro-employer or pro-worker – instead, MOM strives to balance the employer-worker relationship while ensuring vulnerable workers are not disadvantaged,” Minister Tan Chuan Jin wrote on the Manpower blog. “These workers, who may not be as familiar with the laws and avenues for help here, are vulnerable. Their rights should and must be protected.”

It is heartening to note that the minister recognises the rights of these workers and is committed to protecting them. And that really is the nub of it – protecting the workers. It is not really about punishing the employers after the fact, which does not really benefit the workers, although certainly the law must be adhered to.

But how do you protect foreign workers if we allow gangster-like outfits to operate within the bounds of the law, where they can – legally – round-up workers, bundle them into vehicles, driven to unknown destinations – at any time of the day or night – intimidated, silenced, isolated, confined, and then deported without the knowledge of anyone else?

So far, all these industrial relation actions arised not because the worker are making extra demands but the employers who are shortchanging the workers by way of unfair treatments, not paying their wages on time etc etc

It is sick that TCJ didn't have the balls to tell those errant employers off

Yet he got to cheek to say he is neither pro-employers nor pro-worker It is really a shame that an ex SAF general has to resort to such act

Its a very disgusting thing to know that the govt is complicit in allowing illegal detention, or worse in some cases, kidnapping.

Never in the first world practices can you allow an unwarranted holding of a person against his will.

The penalty for kidnapping is minimum life in prison. Its about time they prosecute some of these thugs and show those errant employers that if you abuse due process, you pay for the consequences.

Maybe I'm too optimistic. There is a reason why ppl say there are two sets of laws here. One for the elite, and another for the rest of us.

Minister Tan Chuan Jin now hiding dont dare openly speak about Yishun construction stop work.
What he doing? Why feedback MOM more than ne more no action on employer.
Worst MOM dont entertain worker feedback even hung up phone??????

TCJ is not trusted by LHL, and got snookered by giving him the manpower post. In comparison, kee Chiu is protected species, and got the goodie man social services post. Heck, LHL even carved out the potentially troublesome sports arm to make sure that kee Chiu will have a smooth time.

Come next GE, the chosen one will smell like roses, and the other tainted with shit. This is how the entire civil service works internally, and now is open for all the see what kind of top scholar training system we have.

No wonder there is a shortage of local talent, not because locals are daft, but because of the perverted grooming process.
