I am sure this has been in the mind of many with the two recent cases. In a nutshell it does work in Singapore. In the meantime here is the various types of people and how they react to lawsuits.
1. Type A - Man in the street - these are Singaporeans who over the years have seen how the law favours the rich. It might just make sense to settle to avoid a costly adverse outcome. Both Archie Khoo and SIngarevelu settled with TT Durai even though what both said was factually true and it was eventually unveiled in civil court. They essentially avoid confrontation for the sake of confrontation.
2. Type B - Fan - these though small in numbers are generally ardent supporter or fan of the plaintiff and they need to be convinced that the object of admiration is indeed holy and pure. The very act of a lawsuit serves this purpose well. We are talking about blind faith YPAP type who have no clue who Nelson Mandela is.
3. Type C -Fellow Traveler - these are aligned to the winning team and have placed all their bets with the winning team and cannot afford to be stained by smears that fall on their fellow travellors. They might actually know that the allegations are true but can't afford to cut ties as their investment and their own standing is in Jeopardy. These include the captive press, establishment figures etc.
4. Type D - Blurfuck - these are few but they are adistinct type. These genuinely are so detached from society that they demand absolute proof in black and white before they are prepared to make a judgement. They have have great difficulty reading signs or have no friend or acquaintances that they can check. They are also so blur that lining the dots or solving a simple puzzle is beyond them. These are the very same guys whose might have spouse are having a field day, the entire village is aware except them. Also in extreme cases raising children who resembles their neighbour rather than them.
5. Type E - Voyeurs - only confined to the male gender for unknown reason these chaps relish the confrontation, highly excitable, enjoy seeing lives destroyed, blood spilled and are recognised by the constant attempt to keep the situation alive or actively prodding for action. No interest in the truth. Some will attend court to see the action close-up and get thrills watching both sides.
