A Blessing on Every Wave​

Hannah sat thoughtfully on the shoreline, just close enough to the ocean for the waves to reach her feet, keeping her cool on the hot summer day. As one wave splashed around her, she noticed a beautiful shell left behind. Instinctively, she grabbed the shell and turned it over in her hands. It was beautiful–an amazing tiny gift that had she not noticed might have slipped back out to sea or been trampled underfoot by one of the many people running in and out of the water.

On the next wave, Hannah noticed another shell–a different kind, but equally amazing. Soon, she had to take her hat off to hold all the shells she’d found. These tiny treasures arrived on every ocean wave, yet Hannah realized she’d never noticed or appreciated them before. Looking around her, it seemed no one else was noticing them either. The saints in this passage have been killed for their faith in Jesus, and they want to know how long they will have to wait for justice, for the Lord’s vengeance, and for the completion of God’s kingdom to come.

It’s a question that all of us who are “in Christ” ask in one form or another. When will our faith be made sight? When will God’s remaking of creation, which began at Christ’s resurrection, be complete? When will suffering on this earth be over? When will joy become truly everlasting?

“Wait just a little longer” is the answer. No calendar date is provided, but the Lord promises that it will happen. All of us who are “in Christ” will be able to enjoy full life in God’s new creation someday. In the meantime, we new creations, all of us who are “in Christ,” are held, loved, and kept for the arrival of that big new creation the Lord is working on.

Lord, we are eager for your kingdom to come in its fullness. But we will wait, and as we try to do that in faith, with trust in you and love for one another, help us to serve you faithfully. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Wednesday, the royal couple headed to the Big Apple, where they paid respects to September 11 victims at the 9/11 Memorial. Then, yesterday, Charles and Camilla received a formal cheerio from POTUS and FLOTUS before ending their trip in Virginia, where they visited the Arlington National Cemetery, then celebrated the “North American tradition” of potlucks at an America250 block party.
