TOKYO (AFP) - McDonald's Japan issued an apology after it was revealed one of its outlets had posted a notice banning homeless people for more than a year.

The notice, which had triggered an online debate, said staff at the west Tokyo branch "would refuse entry to people deemed improper," citing poor hygiene and homelessness as examples.

But the global fast food giant said Friday that following complaints, the sign had been replaced, and now made no mention of homelessness.

"Even though the purpose of the notice was for other customers to be able to feel comfortable in the outlet, some of the words it used were inappropriate, and we apologise for that," a company spokesman told AFP.

I have seen many " homeless and lonely " elderly in McDonald...some just go in and sit down and sleep. Some order a drink and sit there for the whole day...and some even sleep during the afternoons. So far, nobody has yet posted any warning not allowing these elderly lonely people to enter their premises.

Singaporeans are gracious people - more gracious than the Japanese. Or is it just the McD Japanese???

I sat there at the hawker's centre. One elderly man approached me, " Uncle, got one dollar for my meals?". I gave him $2...

I was walking along the mall and one elderly uncle came and asked me to give him some change..He showed me his Linked Card..." no money cannot take bus home..." I spare him $2 and he said thank you very much.

One elderly woman came to my office and said her mother just passed away and she had no money. She asked for $30... I gave her $10...

All these are just small acts of kindness and I have many friends - all Singaporeans - who gave generously to needy Singaporeans. I am convinced Singaporeans are kind -hearted, compassionate and generous people. Do you agree?

You should buy the guy a meal instead of giving him money. I have worked with these people before in the homeless shelters abroad and with some needy ones here. Mostly they end up using the money to go 4D, ToTo or buying alcohol which is of no use. Buy him/her a meal and you do them more than one good deed.

you are quite right. I think cash is what they really want. they can go hungry and go begging. but their addiction to toto and 4d and gambling is insatiable..rather sad indeed. but they are my singaporeans and fellow citizens. just make them happy for the time being....you will meet up with more in the near future....

On the topic of McD, I can understand their need to remove such people.

If you been to Melbourne, just visit the McD at the corner of Swanston and Flinders. Its jammed packed with homeless people who don't shower. The smell is unbearable and most clients just avoid or skip the place completely. Not to mention some of the younger drifters tend to be intoxicated and hostile to the clients too.

Singapore, fortunately do not have such a problem yet.

I sincerely hope that our gracious and compassionate government will try to avoid such a dire situation and putting stress on the McD people is not so nice..some uncles even eat from the leftovers !!!

Homeless people stink to high heaven. They should be kept out of all decent establishments.

Should buy them a vegetarian meal.. Healthier. Or they can go to temple for meals. It's free.

Ran into a homeless man in downtown Toronto once, he was dirty, unkempt, and smelled. But he had a pet Golden Retriever that was in perfect condition and well-groomed. Smelled and looked much better than its owner. According to the homeless person, there are government provided shelters he can go to and the food vendors give him food at the end of the business day. He even shared a joint with me.

Cheers!

I was in Melbourne. Went for an evening walk and I was confronted by a junkie who begged for money. I gave him $10....He thanked me and left me alone. He told me he needed the money to go home. Everywhere you got these needy people.

Why are there so many rich people everywhere too ?

I am yet to be confronted by any uncle in our casinos who begged for a dollar to go home. Hope it will never happen here ....

Jamie Oliver Campaign makes McDonald’s change recipe

July 12, 2013

Chef Jamie Oliver won a battle against one of the largest fast food chains in the world. After Oliver showed how McDonald’s hamburgers are made, the franchise announced it will change its recipe.
According to Oliver, the fatty parts of beef are “washed” in ammonium hydroxide and used in the filling of the burger. Before this process, according to the presenter, the food is deemed unfit for human consumption.
According to the chef and presenter, Jamie Oliver, who has undertaken a war against the fast food industry: “Basically, we’re taking a product that would be sold in the cheapest way for dogs, and after this process, is being given to human beings.”
Besides the low quality of the meat, the ammonium hydroxide is harmful to health. Oliver calls it “the pink slime process.”
“Why would any sensible human being put meat filled with ammonia in the mouths of their children?”asked the chef, who wages a war against the fast food industry.
