JAKARTA - The haze may have reached critical levels, but it must not be allowed to affect the strong relationship between Indonesia and Singapore, environment ministers from both countries said on Friday.

They were speaking to reporters after Dr Vivian Balakrishnan called on his counterpart, Professor Balthasar Kambuaya, at Indonesia's environment ministry on Friday afternoon.

He presented a letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono that contained an offer of assistance to help tackle the haze.

Pollutant Standards Index levels in Singapore crossed the 400 mark at noon - a record high - but have since fallen.

"Our people are angry," Dr Balakrishnan said. "They want a solution."
(Typical PAP style - blame other people when they have negative things to do or say. Pathetic, really, when he does even have the balls to say what the govt feels, but attribute its actions on "the people").

But he added: "The Indonesia-Singapore relationship is strong. And Indonesia is taking action on the ground."

Dr Balthasar said investigations are underway and as many as eight companies - foreign and local - may be involved.

Water bombing and cloud seeding action will also begin soon, he added.

He will travel to Riau as early as Friday night to join four ministers to coordinate efforts there. They are Coordinating welfare minister Agung Laksono, Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi, Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan and Agriculture Minister Suswono, he added.

Both men also agreed to bring forward a meeting of Asean environment ministers to tackle the issue.

SINGAPORE: Indonesia has identified eight companies which may be involved in starting the forest fires in Sumatra, and it expects to name the companies within the next few days.





Indonesian Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya revealed this to reporters after meeting his counterpart from Singapore, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan in Jakarta on Friday. Dr Kambuaya said investigations are still ongoing and he was not able to elaborate further where these companies are from.


Dr Balakrishnan expressed his appreciation to his Indonesian counterpart that enforcement actions have been taken.
Dr Balakrishnan met Dr Kambuaya to hand a letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to the Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.


Dr Balakrishnan also welcomed Indonesia's commitment that further action will be taken on the ground to put out the fires within the next two days. This may include activating water bombs.


He said Indonesia has agreed to bring forward the meeting of ASEAN Ministers of Environment to address this issue of haze on a more systematic and progressive basis.

JAKARTA - Indonesia on Friday blamed eight companies, including Singapore's Sinar Mas and Asia Pacific Resources International (APRIL), for fires raging on its island of Sumatra that have sent hazardous levels of smog to neighbouring Singapore.

"The majority of hotspots in Riau (province) are inside APRIL and Sinar Mas concessions," senior presidential aide Kuntoro Mangkusubroto told Reuters.

The environment minister said not all eight companies were Singapore based, but declined to name the rest of them.

In fact, Temasick through its countless subsidiaries has interests in many agri- and commodity companies that are currently responsible for the haze.

I am not at liberty to name them; doing so will put my contacts in peril.

Summary: If Pinky is truly acting in Sinkieland's interests, he should order Temasick to divest of its stakeholdings in those companies (he and Ho Jinx should know which ones I refer to.....)

should first target the dumb EU for their requirement to use biofuels in their vehicles. This requirement came in force in the 90s, and since then it has resulted in massive burning and clearing of indon forests.

I've just returned from Batam & the haze problem is hitting them as badly as Spore. However they don't have PSI monitoring like they do in Spore so can't say how much worse it is there.
The local press in Batam has front page story of the haze problem. TV is reporting about the impact on Pekan Bahru, etc.

The hazardous haze level in S'pore was reported in CNN headline news this evening.

According to the CNN meteorologist this haze problem will be a recurring one because the Indonesian peasants had been clearing land for farming by 'slash and burn' since a thousand years ago.

Foreigners who are thinking of migrating here, better think twice.
