Phor Kark See Columbarium workers behave like gangsters
STOMPer Mr Lee was shocked at the behaviour of some workers at Phor Kark See (Bright Hill) Columbarium, who shouted at Qing Ming visitors and spewed Hokkien vulgarities. One of them also smoked inside the Columbarium.
The STOMPer wrote:
"Workers behaving like gangsters at 88 Bright Hill Drive Columbarium.
"Qing Ming, a time to pay your respects to ancestors. On our visit to Kong Meng San Phor Kark See (Bright Hill Columbarium) yesterday, we witnessed horrific uncouth workers in orange vests shouting to people that they cannot bring lit joss sticks into the ash columbarium to pray to their ancestors.
"My wife and I were passing by and we witnessed a family questioning one of the workers: 'Why a joss stick also cannot... praying only then bring out... ' The replied was a loudly one: 'CANNOT OK HAR... NO JOSS STICK INSIDE.'
"We know from past experience that visitors are allowed to bring lit joss sticks into the ash columbarium during non-Qing Ming periods,. Too many people holding lit joss sticks inside during Qing Ming might be a fire hazard.
"But I feel that the workers' attitudes towards people was far to loud and harsh. The family then said: 'Oh cannot carry a single joss stick but you can walk around inside the ash columbarium and smoke... what are you talking about... what is this?' The worker kept quiet.
"My wife and I were shocked at the way the worker behaved. Yeah, cannot bring lit joss sticks inside but can smoke inside there, does not seems logical.
"Later, we also witness that the same worker talking to another group of workers in similar t-shirts, saying Hokkien exclamations and vulgarities when that family left to bring back the joss stick supposedly to their prayer table.
"The worker told his colleague: 'Next time, remember them, give them problem.' We were still at the corner hearing this and also saw that some workers tailed them secretly from behind, and we hope nothing bad happened.
"This was disgusting.
"I have some issues with the following:
1. Attitude of the staff in orange vests. They should speak properly rather than shout at people.
2. Staff smoking inside the crematorium and enclosed columbarium is against the law.
3. 'Gangsterism' and harsh vulgarities.
4. The Abbot of the temple did not hear any feedback, all blocked by these workers and staff.
5. Never improve the quality of worship - using cremated remains to fill up round cans with red papers as incense urns on the dirty long tables for worship. Some visitors have to bring cloth and newspapers just to make sure everything is ok.
6. Ang pow problem. Maybe if one never gives them tips or ang pows, this is what happens.
"From the above, we were very very disgusted by the way the situation was handled, and how filial people fall prey to undesirable 'gangsters'. We are totally disgusted and feel a sense of injustice to see people being treated this way."
