Human rights at home - starting with maids

Despite quite a number of Singaporeans dying to call themselves Human Rights Activists, I always wondered why no one seems to be bothered about maids forced to walk seven days a week.

I understand the expat community does not tolerate such practices within its rank using subtle pressure and even direct confrontation.

Particularly irked me when someone that I know who is involved in social causes claims that her maid prefers money than a sunday off. My guess is that lady needs someone to look after her kids while she does her 'charitable ' things on Sundays.

It is sad but also inevitable that our PAP government can never please all. Most maids just want to work and upgrade themselves on our advanced status of a First World Country. Most employers do not wish to see their maids squander away their hard earned pay on unnecessary activities. So sad to see people not appreciating good intentions. Sorry but thank you all the same.

Good intentions - absolute rubbish. What people do with their hard earned income is their business. By the same ridiculous logic the whole workforce should be working 7 days a week.

But my dear fellow citizen, they are here to earn money! Won't you think you should be guided the same way if you are under educated, unwise to the ways of a modern metropolis? Thank you.

those who below in human rights, will never hire a maid.
those who breach human rights, but have maid at home, are just hypocrite.

actually the gov is at fault. they draw up stupid law for the maid, basically modern day slavery. PAP is to blame.

the family look at the rules, and they have to act to protect their family and money. so the maid are force to work like slave.

the gov steer the modern day slavery, everyone know the facts, no one care, because they want cheap labour.

PAP is addicted to cheap labour.

I've heard of maids abuse but never I've never heard of maids been forced to work seven days a week. They had a choice in their contract, to have a rest day or to work for some extra pay, the decision is still with the maids.

Employers usually will pefer their maids stayed home on their rest day instead of going out socialising with who knows who, what they do and getting into trouble. I see no wrong in that and no violation of human rights if there's a compromise between the employer, the maid and even the maid agent.

I hope you do not seriously believe that they chose to work 7 days a week. Would you agree to work 7 days a week?

You go to any maid agency and they will all agree to "work" 7 days a week. They do so because the maid agency will not reject them.

The good part is that many Singaporeans are kind enough not to do that to a maid. I have also come across agents that persuade employers not to impose 7 day work regimes.

I do believe, I've known a few indonesians and a philipino maid working for a few of my friends. Especially the philipino, she's with been his family for more than ten years. All of them chose not to have their rest days, only occasionally they will ask for a few days to go home.

Dont ask me would I agree to work 7 days a week, it has no bearing. I am a guy not a maid, I had no straight answers for you.

Maid agencies has to make known to employers that maids are entitled to a rest day, they cant reject them for wanting a rest day. Employers dont usually impose, the terms and conditions are usually discussed and agreed upon by all parties so much so that all agrees there's no exploitations whatsoever.

Bro, I am talking about the majority of maids and not the excetions. I have been told that new maids prefer to work extra days so that they clear the debts with the agent which usually last a few months only.

I just find it unreasonable in this day and age. I think we have become so dependent and so used to it that we have become detached to what is expected as a norm.

I sure both a guy and a maid have aspirations and feelings.

The problem is that the employer is liable if the maid disappears. In view of this, most employers prefer their maids to remain at home everyday. Firstly, you need to ask why does SG need to import foreigners to work as maids? Why can't we employ locals for the job? If you can't afford to hire locals, then you should not be using maids, period. Using cheaper foreigners is akin to becoming addicted to drugs. Once you are hooked, you will suffer terribly if you try to quit.

You got a point about the liability. Certainly makes more sense than maids wanting to work 7 days a week. Agree on the second point as well.

The maids come here to make money. If they choose to work on Sundays, we should not oppose, if this is a way for some extra income or other considerations.

Maids are human too. They have day off and make friends, and many circumstances this is the start of other problems. Maid's money can be cheated? They need to have sex too. Some get pregnant? Some have sex for extra income? Some fall in love and decide to leave the employer on their own? ...............

From many friends' experience, allowing maid for day off is the start of problems.

Are there ways to prevent?

The maid issue is directly related to the working hours of singaporeans.

The govt has forced many ppl to work long hours by not implementing Labour laws to stop companies from fucking our ass more than xx hours a week. That is why women are loosing that vital family role and hence no one is at home to look after the children or elderly.

First attack was the western propaganda of woman;s right to work. very very devious becos prior to that everyone knows the way for family to work is the man to bring back the dole and the women as a domestic ally at home. always has been and ppl are happy including the women. but the women have been seduced to work for more $$ at the expense of children and elders.

If one or two women followed its still ok, but the moment the masses did this, the battle of the elite has won becos WHEN MORE ENTER THE WORK FORCE, SALARY IS REDUCED AND PPL HAVE LESS TO SPEND ON.
