How to get out of a vicious circle?

QUOTE: "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results."

TO get out of a vicious circle, do something different.

Simple enough. :)

I seem to be in one recently. And how to get into a virtuous circle?

Pls advice.

To get out of a vicious cycle / addiction / bad habit the fastest way is to introduce another cycle which is wholesome / good habit. An exact opposite action, so to speak.

So if you're addicted to acohol, try replacing with green tea...if cigarettes, try Vitamin C lozenges...if it's sex, try the opposite...

Vicious circle does not mean hanging with the wrong crowd (you already know that I think) and neither is it the opposite of virtuous cycle, as in it does not mean doing a non-virtuous thing again and again.

It means repeating the same actions or behaviour and expecting a different outcome, yet you keep getting the same outcome.
An example would be if you kept going to clubs expecting to find a nice girl to marry. You end up finding a different type of girl, yet you keep going to clubs expecting to find that nice girl. The repeated behaviour does not neceesarily have to be non virtuous.

The vicious circle is indeed doing the same thing repeatedly, and getting the same result, which is not favourable, based on your original intention or objective.

But it could be that subconciously, you want that same result. :)

easy don't need to get out. just pcc instead of calling chicken

Ah.... The power of our subconscience.

It takes the conscious mind to decide to change, and you can only hope that your subconscience will follow suit, kind of unfair is it? :D

Mental habits like any other physical habit like pcc, takes time to change.

BTW, You watched Inception already? Decent movie for Psychology 101 buffs.

What Is a Schema?

By Kendra Cherry, About.com Guide

Definition:
A schema is a cognitive framework or concept that helps organize and interpret information. Schemas can be useful, because they allow us to take shortcuts in interpreting a vast amount of information. However, these mental frameworks also cause us to exclude pertinent information in favor of information that confirms our pre-existing beliefs and ideas. Schemas can contribute to stereotypes and make it difficult to retain new information that does not conform to our established schemas.

It's the same as your subconscious vicious circle. :)

5 PHASES OF CHANGE

5 Typical Mood Phases to change exist.

The phases are:

1. Shock, a person initially learned that Change is coming

2. Denial, a person is in a comfort zone, fearing the unknown posed by the coming Change

3. Depression, feeling depressed and negative about the change, realizing that without Change, the road will lead to a sudden end.

4. Insight, Change starting to take place within a person willing to try, seeing the chance of success

庖丁解牛, 游刃有余

A cook was dismembering the carcass of an ox for his master. He pushed with his hands, trod with his feet, squeezed with his shoulders and pressed with his knees.

The sound of the cleaver cutting and of the carcass being severed was like music, and the cook's actions were like those of a dancer. His master exclaimed, "Oh, what elegant skill!" The cook laid down his cleaver and said, "I love the Dao more than skill. I am now working with my mind, and let the intervals between flesh, sinews and bones be severed according to their natural structure.

The edge of the cleaver seems to have no thickness, but space exists between all the animal's joints. When something with no thickness enters a place with space, there will always be enough room for it to move freely.

So though my cleaver has been used for nineteen years, it is as keen as if it had just been sharpened. But at places hard to cut, I have to move with care, to make sure that the carcass is cut up smoothly and spread on the ground. Only then can I enjoy the satisfaction of accomplishing the job."

Later, the expression "butchering an ox" came to be used to describe an elegant and well-practiced skill. "Having plenty of room for the play of the butcher's cleaver" is used to describe a person who is more than equal to a task or who does a job with practiced skill and ease.

For the first time since I started this thread, I see that I am gradually out of the vicious circle.

Thanks everyone for all your continuous support, love, and advises! :D

i do not know what vicious cycle you are talking about . If you are referring to the vicious sinkie cycle. The way to get out of it is to avoid making friends with sinkies and stay away from them, finally get out of sinkieland, then you are safe.

Should be "Thanks for the ADVICE...".

"Advice" is a non countable noun; you do not add an "s" to make it plural.

"Advice" is like "Rice". You say... "Please pass me the Rice." You don't say "Please pass me the rices" because "Rice", like "advice", is a non countable noun.

There are many other examples. To test your knowledge of non countable nouns, go to English Language Quiz - Countable or Non-countable Nouns (I-TESL-J) and take the test.

The Spiral of Successful Habits - http://zenhabits.net/spiral/

Found this on the net. Absolutely agree. Change one habit at a time. Focus on one habit you want to cultivate. Focus.

For Alfrescians, you can change your Sinkies' behaviours one at a time or attend a course at the British Council to brush up on your written English.

Whatever, just do it and have fun. :D

"Autobiography in Five Chapters"

1) I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost . . . I am hopeless.
It isn't my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

2) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don't see it.
I fall in again.
I can't believe I'm in the same place.
But it isn't my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

3) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in . . . it's a habit
My eyes are open
I know where I am
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

4) I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I walk around it

5) I walk down another street.
