Swagger's win a fitting tribute

Michael Lee

Friday, November 25, 2011

A desperate lunge on the line saw favourite Swagger scrape home by a short head on Friday, but to trainer Patrick Shaw, it did not matter how the victory was earned as it was more importantly a fitting tribute to the winner’s owners recently bereaved by the loss of the head of the family, Mr TM Yong.

Mr Yong is the father of Mark Yong, the main owner of powerful outfits EMMA Stable (who races Swagger) and Tmen Stable, two of the main supporters of the South African conditioner. He passed away on Tuesday.

Yes,the Woh Hup family are in the construction, developer, engineering bussiness.
in the early 80s i used to have kopi with one of their son the cigar smoking yong mee him at their office in guthrie house
sixth ave opposite the old bukit timah turf club..at times follow him to the stables to see his horses.
their horses were racing under the Gold stable and Chelsea stable...at one time they were also in the business selling horses and animals feed.

His son Mark Yong is a qualified accountant is very low profile but is probaly one of the richest man in spore.
Thanks to his vietnamese chinese wife Emily Yong who is a daughter of a very powerful army general in vietnam.
with his wife family connection in vietnam,Mark team up with asia football kingpin sabah kia to form the soccer betting website IBC base in vietnam..Mark provide the security and set up while sabah kia get his runners and agents to get players..
they rake in millions in football betting all over the world especially in asia..

11 sunday 2011

RACE 1

Zinly (10) had every chance last Sunday. Ran on well after jumping from a wide alley. Drawn badly again. New Irish jockey should know him better now. Big say. Apache Junction (6) has been racing in consistent fashion bar at his second-last run. Will have to overcome a wide alley. Honest and can finish in the money. Decisive (2) has not done too badly in five starts. Has early pace and from his good draw, he should be up there for a long way. Winning Dan (5) is dropping back in Class 5 where he should find the opposition easier. Can turn form around.

RACE 2

After a closing third and a fourth, Xin Star (10) should have some admirers here. Blinkers replaced by pacifiers. Alpha Infinity (7) was well backed at debut but did not quite fire. Should strip fitter second-up. Improved run expected. Prize Fighter (8) has trialled okay and comes from a powerful yard. Keep safe. Moshpit Milly (5) has shown some pace in some of her races but tends to weaken badly in the end.

RACE 3

Sichuan Ruler (2) looks the goods here. Out of the placings only once in six starts, he looks all set to add a third success although he has never scored on Polytrack before. Benji’s Rule (5) nearly staged an upset last time out. Knocking on the door and can be a big threat here. Biggest Secret (7) has lost his original form but has shown glimpses of form in recent runs. Will appreciate the 1200m better. Outside chance. Samurai Kid (12) is on the upgrade. Drawn well but will have to be at his level best to beat this lot. Place claims.

RACE 4

Debutant Taichi Master (11) ran third twice in his barrier trials and would not surprise if he is forward first-up. Hearts (7) ran well at debut but did not make his presence felt second-up when well supported. Reverts to Polytrack. Bears watching. Experience is on the side of Real Goodman (3). Has turned in some handy performances in six starts. Can make the board. Urban Legend (2) is resuming from a layoff. Can go well fresh. Include in your multiples.

RACE 5

This looks like right up the alley of His My Idol (2). Distance and surface are to his liking. Mitre Peak (1) has a nice turn of foot but may find this a tad short. Place claims. Buzet (7) is another handy sort who will relish the trip. Has been thereabouts of late and is sure to take a hand in this. Biggest Chief (3) is still winless in 11 runs but he has been closing in at his recent outings. Step-up in distance should not bother him.

RACE 6

Be With You (7) is among the most consistent performers in this Class 5 race. Should have a good posie from his draw. Will be charging home. Zac Generation (4) is another one who will be running on towards the business end. Go close. Blinkers go off Distinct Niche (8) and that may turn his form around. Can handle Polytrack though he is more of a turf horse. Commanche (5) is not the worst here. Showed some form over Polytrack three runs back. Outside chance.

RACE 7

Dark Matter (3) faces a tougher lot but on recent form, he looks like he can hold his own here. Nice draw is a bonus. His main danger is the in-form Tropical Forest (2). Pacifiers seem to have done the trick on the grey. Carries more weight but should still give some sight. No Respite (6) has ability and can give the leading duo a run for their money. Winkers off. Keep safe. Grand Arrival (5) scored at his last start but this is a different kettle of fish. Can finish in the money.

RACE 8

After running second to Rocket Man, Merchant (3) is bound to draw his fair share of admirers in this easier bunch. Hard to beat. If Polytrack specialist Northern Lion (2) can overcome his wide alley and settle on the rails early, he will be a tough nut to crack in the home straight. This may be a bit too slippery for Captain Obvious (1) but he will be in the first three from the start, and his better stamina can see him reel a few in. Powerful Tree (5) is no slouch but looks a few notches below these. May have to settle for a minor spot.

RACE 9

Though beaten a long way back in second, Kuti Kuti (7) showed he was in progress and this could be his lucky break. Rapid Rewards (8) has good gate speed and if he can enjoy a soft lead, he can hold on for a place. Vingt Des (6) did not run a bad race after his win two starts back. Holding form and is expected to be in firing line. Chan’s Electra (1) has been around the mark without winning. Not without a say.

RACE 10

Yin Xin (1) has been a model of consistency in five starts, notching two wins and three seconds. Still in good nick and from his good barrier No 3, he is the likely pacesetter. Hard to run down. Xin Treasure (8) is another youngster on the way up. His last win over 1200m on Polytrack was full of merit. Has drawn marble one this time. Will be in the hunt for a long way. Two-year-old Work Ahead (10) scored a gutsy win at debut. This looks harder but he is not without a chance. Winontop (4) is resuming and has a good first-up record. Will be thereabouts.

RACE 11

Davide (2) is a promising sort who looks destined for better things. Wears blinkers for the first time. Born To Fly (3) will be his main threat. The noted backmarker is wearing pacifiers instead of winkers. Will be flying home late but the shorter trip is not in his favour. No Reason (8) is another customer who will be charging home late. Place claims. Big Gallant (1) is struggling to regain his former brilliance. Last race was not too bad. Can make the quartet.

Leticia Dragon off the mark with second runner
Michael Lee
Sunday, January 01, 2012

Newly-licensed trainer Leticia Dragon began her career with a bang on New Year’s Day when she won her first race with only her second career runner, long-priced outsider Caiyaya.

Dragon, who honed her craft assisting her just-retired father Douglas for seven years, became the first woman to be licensed at Kranji after she was allocated stables last November.

Used to leading in numerous winners for her father, the former air stewardess was however beaming with a different kind of glow when she strode to the winner’s circle as the new head of the stable, with her proud parents right by her side. Caiyaya was running in her name - “LA Dragon”.

Caiyaya (Saifudin Ismail) gives trainer Leticia Dragon her first win at her very
first day in the office.

“When Caiyaya hit the front, it was an amazing moment of euphoria,” said an elated Dragon. “My dad gave me a hug and a high-five after we won. It was a great moment!

“This is a dream start and hopefully there’ll be more winners to come!”

Saddling seven runners at her first day at the office, Dragon was more expected to get off to a flier with her first runner, US-bred debutant Arrow To Post, but the latter came up short by half-a-length to Dragon Spirit in Race 2, the Prosperity Stakes (1200m).

Friendless in the betting, Dragon’s second runner Caiyaya was one of the least fancied to give the 37-year-old trainer her ice-breaker, but under an inspired ride by jockey Saifudin Ismail, the Colombia five-year-old got up in the last stride to beat Affirmation (Tan Wei Li) by a short head in the $55,000 Happiness 2012 Handicap, a Class 4 Division 1 race over 1400m on turf.

Dragon was on the other hand not all that surprised by the $396 roughie’s victory, his sixth from 31 starts for the New Wing Stable.

“On his last run I gave him a small chance. He finished in a 1000m race on Poly very strongly,” she said.

“I told Saifudin to keep in sixth position and let him come home. I was worried about the field which was pretty strong and the fact he does not really have proven form on grass.

“But he is a tough horse and Saifudin rode him very well. It was him who won on him first-up.

“I’d like to thank the owners who have been with us from Day 1.”
