STOMPer Michael said he tried to top-up his EZ-Link card with $10 of 10-cent coins, but this was refused by SMRT staff who quoted an MAS ruling.

Wrote Michael:

"This happened today (Aug 24) around 3.20pm at the Bras Basah MRT customer service counter.

"The staff member serving at the counter did not want to accept the coins for top up.

"He could not explain why when I asked him in English and showed me the card stating the Monetary Authority of Singapore ruling and asked another staff member in civilian clothes to help.

"He said they do not accept coins up to $2 only if it is less than a $1 denomination.

"When I asked why, he showed me the card stating the MAS ruling again.

"I read the guidelines and it says purchases made.

"I am topping up my MRT stored value card and do not think that I am making a purchase.

"When both of them could not answer me, another staff member came, I think he is a supervisor; and he showed me the card again.

"When I told him I could read that, he raised his voice at me and 'slashed' me to count the coins before passing to him.

"On seeing that I was not getting through to them, I took back my $10 of 10 cent coins and topped up my card using the other coins which were in $1, 50 cents and 20 cents denomination.

"I said to him,'Thank you for your customer service,' and walked away.

"He did not even look at me.

"Is SMRT right in refusing to top up the card using coins of above $2 if the denomination is less than $1?

"Aren't all these coins legal tender in Singapore?

"Furthermore, I was not making a purchase, I was just topping up.

"Please enlighten us. Thank you."

This Michael should be shot, hanged on tree to die. Only an idiot will do such nonsense.

Understood his frustration in not getting deal with his 10 cent coins, but he should be considerate about fellow riders queued behind him.
He should try his trick during off peak hours.

another stomp post showing dat stompers r indeed idiots! ...

he should take his 10 cent coins and pay at NTUC or Shen Shiong..they will love those coins...I think drink stalls also love those coins too,,,dont understand why he want to make things for for those queuing? the ugly singaporean indeed..

He is just trying to be funny..... Attention seeking male whore.

Isn't this legal tender? What nonsense?

Currency Act Chapter 69..part:

(3) Coins issued by the Authority, if the coins have not been illegally dealt with, shall be legal tender up to their face value in Singapore as follows:
(a)
in the case of coins of a denomination exceeding 50 cents — for the payment of any amount;
(b)
in the case of coins of a denomination of 50 cents — for the payment of an amount not exceeding $10; and
(c)
in the case of coins of a denomination lower than 50 cents — for the payment of an amount not exceeding $2.

The MRT Station personnel is right, the user is just stating the point...I bet many of you do not know this law!!! Any Merchants or banks can refuse to accept in accordance to the Currency Act... but then again..sometime common sense prevails!

Looks like Steven Lim, is he trying to be funny?

I think the pictures show the mrt staff and not himself cos you can see both guys wearing the uniform and the malay guy behind is off duty staff he mentioned he also spoke to a few of them.

And topping up the card is making a purchase - he's purchasing a service.

The point is, there is the Currency ACT...if every one of us, were to follow that to the letter, life would be rigid, right!. This Michael is just stretching the thing a bit too far, but he has a point..what you have a pocket full of 10ct coins that adds up to $10 & you want to top up your card at the counter?? that is what is happening..they enforce the Currency Act. Ok he mixes the coins & they accepted...get it!

Then again, will the top up machine accept 10ct coins up to $10...anyone want to try?? the Currency Act states that you must use the coins as stated for legal tender in a LEEgal way as stipulated in the act....ha ha ha

Best, you don't use any coins... ha ha ha ha

He is just trying to be funny..... Attention seeking male whore.

If that is indeed his pic, then he is as you describe!

Seems that commoners are now using new media as an innovative way to give themselves a day or two of fame, or infamy!

Why no law on 5 cents?

I hate it when any stall that I patronise give me 2x5 cents change. If more or do that too often, that is the last time I am going there.

I sidetrack a little can? Once at a gas station I paid my bill but included 8 quarters (25 setang coin in Thai) to make up 2 baht, the attendant refused to accept and asked me to go 7-Eleven to use the coins. I got fed up slammed the coins on his table asked him if he knows that guy on the coin and accused him of being disrespectful he lan lan have to take them like a slave. I laughed like mad after that.
