Hope For Singapore?

We do want to have good relations with all our neighbours, why should we not?

We say we want...but sometimes our arrogance and actions irk our neighbours. Foreign relations is a fine art. Can Shanmugam do well?

The inexorable transformation of Singapore has begun....

Seems like you are more concerned with the Indian invasion. These are not Tamils.

Why depend solely on Shanmugam? If I recall correctly, we have our Emerituses, Tommy Koh, Kishore Mahbubani and others to forge good relations with other countries.

For example to sustain ridiculously low corporate tax rates, we have ever higher GST. They give all expense paid scholarships for foreign children to attend university in the limited number of university places. At the same time, they will deny Singaporean children the chance to go to university and send them to get a second class Poly diploma.

In the eyes of the PAP, it all makes perfect sense. This is because they are working for the good of Singapore rather than for the good of Singaporeans.

Good points you brought up and I fully agree. It's the average Singaporean who shoulder the burden of such unwise policies which favour foreigners and burdens Singaporeans. Businesses and foreigners automatically praise the PAP.

But Singaporeans know better and must act on this.

Shamugam is just the key man representing our foreign relations. of cse, he has TK, KM and his whole ministry's staff to help him. But if relations sour, Shanmugam is on the chopping block

Yes, but what do you want to know about Shan? If he is not up to the mark, then it is a problem, otherwise it is not.

I hope Shanmugam will perform up to expectations..But he does have a known weakness

Besides the US, Singapore do enjoy excellent relationships with Australia, Canada, Britain and etc. Having special American interests is a good thing and by being a bastion for the Americans in a Muslim-dominated region it is in our own interests to keep it that way. It does not mean alienating ourselves from our neighbours. We do want to have good relations with all our neighbours, why should we not?

Recent Japanese overture with its big Asian neighbour, China, marks a significant change in the balance of international political power. Following China, Japan is going to engage India. Obama is putting up a brave front as if nothing is happening and everybody is trying to play low profile but the shift has definitely started. In an environment like this, if you have leant too much to one side, it can be difficult to suddenly change to lean over to the other side. If you are a small player, it is particularly difficult because you have no trading chips.

Very true.. SG needs to be friends, if possible, with all.

SG has to do a delicate balance..China vs USA, China vs Taiwan, Najib vs Anwar, etc...the situation is dynamic and volatile. what's applicable today may not be so tomorrow. So Shanmugam and his merry men have to be on top of the situation. One bad decision and all the hardwork done over the years go down the drain.

Can we rely on MFA alone as LHL looks jaded?

The poor regional environment may throw up truly good leaders in SG. That wld be a blessing to SG

How will the poor regional environment throw up truly great leaders here? The Middle East has been a shitty region for ages but how many truly good leaders has that cesspit produced?

It may or maynot be..but bad times can throw up great leaders to save the country. If not for challenging times facing the nation, such people may choose to lead a more sedentary life instead of taking political leadership

Well maybe he is practising good relationships with all colours. I already pointed that out in the other thread.

There is no hope then.

hahahaha...but i am less sceptical than you. even if we cant change the 60%, there is still a glimmer of hope that the pap can change within.

With LKY gone, LHL losing control and useless ministers dismissed, will the moderates (top four items of Post #1) be able turn SG ard for Singaporeans...

So, not so hopeless yet:)

There is hope for Singapore if we stop the greeds.
We have transformed from a swamp to what we are today and the miws still propelling forward for more.
LKY has sucessfully transferred the power to his son and he still wants more.
We have enough water from 3 reservoirs and a Shiit Plant but he blocks the water from discharging to the sea cos' he still wants more.
We have save a gigantic reserves to back up GIC and Temasek in case they fail because he wants more.
We increase the population to enhance the GDP because he wants more.
We are already well known in the world but he still wants more.
We have enough intelligent and hard working ciitizens and he still wants more.

The creator or God if you believe in one, creates enough for everybody but he cannot create enough for the greedy.

With the old man gone, his son will feel insecure. He is likely going to consolidate power by appointing more cronies to key positions or give the existing ones more perks to strengthen their support for him. He may also remove the more "progressive" party members to quash potential rebellions. Amendments will be made to the law to prosecute dissenters more effectively. The online media will be more tightly controlled. There will be a sudden spike in the number of "new citizens", which translates to more votes for them in the next GE.

The 60% will continue to bend over to be screwed. Same old, same old.
