GE could take place after Presidential Elections

Sun, Jan 23, 2011

The People's Action Party needs only a couple more candidates for the upcoming General Election, said Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong at the PAP Women's Wing Investiture on Saturday.

He also said that "one key consideration for the Prime Minister, is whether to hold it before, or after the presidential election in August".

He is the first PAP leader to mention in public that the GE could take place after the Presidential Election, due by Aug 31 this year.

On Friday, Foreign Minister George Yeo said the GE would probably take place in the second quarter of this year.

hahaha...Presidential election???
chance of walk-over is 99%.......

It's supposed to be a long overdue Malay "turn." If PAP fields a Malay, they must pray for no Chinese contestants, discourage or disaqualify all Chinese contestants. The 1% chance left for contest is that PAP fields two Malay candidate themselves.

not a bad decision for PAP to hold the GE after the Presidential Election, test the market first.

The % of votes for the PAP endorsed President candidate will be +- 3% of the votes PAP will get in the coming GE.

In order for PAP to "test" water, they have to allow one opposite candidate of not of their choice to see how far it would go.

I would say, having PE before Ge is the best way and the smartest way to go.

Dont know which idiot been insisting to me that GE should be held before PE.

The party that have been working for the voters' interest will get elected. They need not have to worry about when the election is held.

I believe Bernard Chan of WP was busy cataloging a list of possible GE dates in the April to May range and arguing on case by case basis the merit of each date he chose.

I wonder why people like to speculate with such precision!!

There's no use speculating. Apr-2011 is the earliest possible and Dec-2011 is the latest possible. Just be prepared. No sane PM would actually stretch to the Jan-Feb-2012 dateline. It's unsound strategy because the PM would be vulnerable to be held to last minute ransom demands by his own MPs since time is running out for him.

They must stock up on 'tangerines', 'abalone', 'yu shan', 'bak kwa' ( not halal) & distribute before the BIG DAY...to give away....:D

The Parliamentary and Presidential Election should be held simultaneously to save trouble, time and costs.

No need to speculate on date of GE. Not important at all. Just vote them out!!! Rather, vote opposition.

Date of GE becomes important only if you are betting. Thus far, the bookies have yet to open plate.

The idea of the four races turning turns at the presidency was when the President is nominated by Parliament. Since the presidency has become an elected office, there shouldn't be any arrangement or restriction of taking turns. The best supported man wins - that's what election is all about, isn't it?
