Ferrying workers in caged lorry decks to be banned from January 2027: Sun Xueling

Caged lorries can no longer be used to ferry workers from January next year, Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling said in Parliament on Wednesday (March 4).

Workers can no longer be ferried in caged lorry decks come January next year, Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling said in Parliament during the Committee of Supply debates in Parliament on Wednesday (March 4).

Speaking on the topic of safety of worker transport, she commented that "good progress" has been made in introducing requirements for lorries ferrying workers to be fitted with canopies and higher protective side railings, lower speed limits and minimum space requirements.

"In close consultation with our tripartite partners, we will take a further step," SMS Sun said.

Companies that fail to comply with the ban will be subjected to penalties, and details will be shared ahead of the ban.

During the intervening period, companies must also continue to ensure that workers have safe access to and from the lorry deck, the Ministry of Transport said.

Companies can still utilise caged lorries for transporting goods and equipment after the ban kicks in.

Should these companies want to continue using caged lorries to ferry workers, they must convert the rear deck to incorporate a canopy and side railings, the ministry added.
 
I do not feel anything wrong as long as the lorry does not speed and keep at 50Km/h. It is
full utilisation of an expensive vehicle in SG including the $100,000 COE. Small businesses have been doing this for as long as the 70s.
Otherwise, cost will go up for business having to charter mini vans and it is not cheap again with the COE.
It is only dangerous when the FW driver drives like F1 and that is what's wrong with the LTA rules on speed limit for ferrying workers.

This is not those used in the old days which beeps and has a beacon on top to blink. I think the new speed limiter mechanically limits the vehicle's speed to 60km/h, unless intentionally tampered with, which will then become an offense to both the driver and its company.

There was no need to install any fancy gadgets last time and it worked since everyone on the road knew lorry has to go slow especially ferrying people or cargoes
to prevent accidents. Dont know which smart alec increase the speed limit of lorry.
