The women had sandwiched themselves between empty crates used for storing bread. -- PHOTOS: ICA

TWO Chinese nationals were arrested last Thursday for attempting to enter Malaysia illegally using a bread delivery van. The women, aged 51 and 48, had sandwiched themselves between empty crates used for storing bread. They were caught when Immigration & Checkpoint Authority (ICA) officials caught a glimpse of a silhouette form through the crevices of the crates. The pair admitted that they had entered Singapore to seek illegal employment but decided to leave for Malaysia after they were unable to find jobs in Singapore. They also claimed that a Chinese agent had arranged for them to meet the driver at a carpark in the Woodlands area, who then instructed them to hide inside the van. The driver, 31, admitted to having agreed to take the pair to Malaysia illegally as he was heavily in debt. He was offered $1,600 to carry out the illegal act. He and a co-driver were charged in Court on Dec 12 for conveying illegal immigrants. The two women were also charged in Court for illegal entry.

6 years for credit card fraud

OVER two days in April, a Malaysian bought nearly $50,600 worth of watches, cameras, cellphones, laptops and jewellery with fake credit cards. But before Jason Phang Kah Yuen could return to Kuala Lumpur on the third day to collect his cut - 10 per cent of the value of the loot - he was nabbed in a Geylang hotel. The 34-year-old was jailed for six years by a district court on Monday. He came here on April 22 on the orders of a Malaysian syndicate, together with Ng Chee Hong, 33, who drove the car. The pair, who shopped mainly at Mustafa Centre and Orchard Towers, made nearly 60 purchases before being arrested in their hotel room in Lorong 18 Geylang on April 24. Police found 13 counterfeit credit cards and a forged Indonesian passport on Phang, while goods amounting to $38,250 were recovered from the room and the car. The court heard that the duo had made an earlier trip on April 11, also for the purpose of using fake credit cards, but no details of these offences were revealed. Asking for leniency, Phang told the court he had borrowed money from unlicensed moneylenders to start a food business in Malaysia, but it failed. He had a debt of about RM100,000 (S$40,800) at the end of last year. One of the loan sharks proposed that he used the fake credit cards. Phang said he agreed because he was desperate. Ng has yet to be dealt with.

A former board member of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS), Ho Ying Dat (pictured) was fined $10,000 for forging a certificate when registering as a patent agent in 2002

A FORMER board member of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) was fined $10,000 for forging a certificate when registering as a patent agent in 2002. Ho Ying Dat, 52, who pleaded guilty on Monday, could have been jailed for up to two years. His lawyer B. Ganesh said that Ho, a Malaysian and a Singapore permanent resident, had passed the examinations set by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in April 1992. However, he failed to fulfil the residency qualification of working in the US for a year. The Malaysian returned here as his father was very ill then. In July 1992, he set up his own patent firm Lawrence Y.D. Ho & Associates, with his wife. In 2002, IPOS required all patent agents to be licensed. Ho was worried he may not be registered as he did not have certification and decided to forge an USPTA certificate.

Drop money scam: 2 caught

TWO more Chinese nationals have been caught for theft using the 'drop money' scam. The two men, aged aged 51 and 52 years, tried to con a 78-year-old man after he had withdrawn money from the bank at about 2 pm on Monday. The victim was walking along Middle Road when he noticed a stack of notes 'dropping' out of the first suspect's pocket. The suspect, who was walking in front of the victim, appeared to be unaware and continued walking away. The second suspect then appeared and picked up the stack of money, and approached the victim offering to split the money with him. At this juncture, the first suspect who had 'dropped' the money reappeared and confronted the duo about his missing money. On the pretext of proving that the money was not with the victim, the second suspect emptied the victim's pockets and showed the valuables to the first suspect.

In the process of doing this, the second suspect took the opportunity and stole the victim's money. To further confuse the victim, the second suspect also placed a purse inside the victim's pocket and told him to wait for him while he and the first suspect left towards an unknown direction to settle the conflict. It was then the victim realised that his money was missing from his pocket and the purse entrusted to him was sewn shut. Through extensive enquiries and follow-up investigations, police officers conducted an stakeout and managed to arrest the two suspects at a hotel off Balestier Road. Police also recovered cash amounting to S$1524, RMB 7,600, and US$76 together with other items like empty purses and sewing kits. The two suspects, who are believed to be involved in other similar cases , will be charged in court on Wednesday for theft. If convicted, they can be jailed up to three years, fined, or both.

Man strips naked at Charke Quay on New Year's Day

A man lining up outside a club decided to give fellow revellers some 'entertainment' as he stripped himself naked and engaged in a game of hide-and-seek with club security.

According to citizen journalism website STOMP, which received information from a reader, the incident happened at about 1am on New Year's Day, just after the countdown.

The reader was among patrons waiting in line to enter a club in Clarke Quay when he saw the man strip himself down to his birthday suit.

The naked man then began a game of hide-and-seek with the security staff at the club, the reader told STOMP. A large number of police were later involved in the chase in an attempt to get him dressed again.

But according to the STOMP reader, the man's clothes were nowhere to be found. Patrons who had been watching the naked man prance around the club area later learned that he had to be be eventually subdued with a stun gun.

"Pity as he really was extremely entertaining to the large crowd that had gathered to watch him prance around in his birthday suit."

In Singapore, public nudity is considered obscene and hence an offence.

An earlier report today had a resident from Sengkang submit a photo to STOMP of another naked man wandering aimlessly in the estate.

Almost a year ago, on Jan 24, 2009, a couple, Swedish exchange student Jan Philip, 21, and A*Star scholar Eng Kai Er, 24, caused a stir by strolling down Holland Village nude.

While they escaped a jail term, both were charged and fined $2,000 each.

Taiwan man molested woman on MRT
06 Jan 2010

SOURCE: The Straits Times

A TAIWANESE man who molested a woman on board an MRT train last August was fined $4,000 yesterday.

Hsu Ming Ta, 42, a permanent resident working in an IT company, admitted touching the buttocks of a finance administrator on Aug 4 while the train was between the Raffles Place and Tanjong Pagar stations.

The court heard that the 27-year-old woman was facing the doorway when she felt something brush against her, but dismissed it as an accident.

But then she felt another touch and yet another, and heard a commuter shout: “Hoi, what are you doing?”

She immediately turned around and saw Hsu standing very close to her.

Two men who saw him touching her helped her detain him.

Hsu, who is married with a daughter, could have been jailed up to two years or caned or fined or received any combination of these punishments.

Kamrul, who worked at the site, was arrested and charged with her murder. -- ST PHOTO: WONG KWAI CHOW

A BANGLADESHI construction worker involved in a love triangle with an Indonesian maid was on Friday sentenced to death after he was convicted of murdering her. Kamrul Abdul Hasan Quddus, 35, looked shocked on hearing the guilty verdict, which came almost a year after his High Court trial in February last year. The naked body of his on-off girlfriend, Ms Yulia Afriyanti, 25, was found stuffed in a cardboard box in a unit of an uncompleted condominium in Queensway on Dec 16, 2007. Kamrul, who worked at the site, was arrested and charged with her murder. He told police that she was already dead when he found her at the worksite but was too frightened to tell anyone. During the trial, it emerged that Ms Yulia was also seeing another man during their on-off relationship. DNA tests showed Kamrul had sex with her before her death; his fingerprints were also found at the scene. But the defence tried to argue that the evidence was circumstantial and did not prove he killed her. Kamrul chose not to testify in his defence.

Vietnamese pickpockets caught

POLICE have arrested a young Vietnamese couple who pickpocketed an unsuspecting shopper's mobile phone in a crowded shopping mall on Dec 29.
The suspects, who are here on social visit passes, are also believed to have stolen from several other victims in a similar fashion. In the Dec 29 incident, the couple kept bumping into a 34-year-old woman who was shopping at a Bugis mall, arousing her suspicion. When the woman checked her bag, she found her mobile phone missing. She immediately ran after the couple, who had walked away. The victim managed to catch up with them and caught hold of the woman suspect's bag in a bid to detain her. But she broke free and the fled with the man. The victim then called the Police.

Police managed to establish the identities of the suspects, and arrested the 17-year-old Vietnamese woman at Immigration and Checkpoints Authority Building at Kallang Road. They later caught the 19 year-old Vietnamese man at the Immigration Checkpoint of Changi Airport as he was about to leave Singapore. About S$1,000 and some foreign currencies, 14 mobile phones, three digital cameras, six bottles of perfume and two media players were found on the man. The two suspects will be charged in Court on Friday for theft. They can be jailed up to three years and fined, if convicted.

Court ups robbers' jail terms

Use pix of both men, if available

<!-- by line --> <!-- end by line --> By Khushwant Singh

A ROBBER had his jail term doubled to 20 years while his accomplice had the 10-year jail term raised to 15 years by the Court of Appeal on Friday. They will also be caned 24 times. Hirris Martin, 22, and James Anggang, 23, had robbed a Bangladeshi marine worker of $50 and a cell phone near the Aljunied MRT station in January 2008. with another man, who is still at large. They were armed with a metal rod and the victim died of head injuries later in hospital. The two men, both from Sarawak, pleaded guilty last May to committing robbery with grievous hurt and were jailed for 10 years and ordered to be given 24 strokes. James was also convicted of robbing another Bangladeshi some 10 days earlier and jailed 5 years concurrently. He was also ordered to be caned 12 times for this offence but had already been sentenced to the maximum 24 strokes. This means that James received the very same punishment for two convictions as Harris, who committed only one crime, said Deputy Public Prosecutor Lee Sing Lit on Friday. The two men, who did not have lawyers, merely asked Chief Justice Chan Sek Keong, and appeal judges V.K. Rajah and Tay Yong Kwang not to increase their sentences without offering any reasons.

Driver's foiled attempt to smuggle contraband cigarettes across the border

1,456 cartons of contraband cigarettes, hidden in well-concealed compartments of a bus, was seized by ICA early Thursday. -AsiaOne

Thu, Jan 14, 2010
AsiaOne
1,456 cartons of contraband cigarettes were seized by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) early Thursday at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
After sawing through the ceiling of a bus from the top with an electric saw, ICA officers found the contraband cigarettes in well-concealed compartments within the bus.
The potential Customs duty and GST payable for the contrabands are estimated at S$102,500 and S$9,300 respectively.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the 43-year-old Indian bus driver had agree to smuggle in the contrabands for RM1,500 (S$623) upon successful delivery of the items. He claimed he would only be given further instructions after he had sent all the workers to their workplaces.
If convicted, first time offenders can be fined up to 20 times the amount of duty evaded and liable to a jail term not exceeding three years.
For second or subsequent convictions, offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty evaded and jailed up to six years. They also face further fines based on the amount of GST evaded, and the vehicle used in conveying the contraband will also be liable for forfeiture.
The case was referred to Singapore Customs for further investigations.
