By Khushwant Singh

A MALAYSIAN logistics executive insists he left a wallet he found in the Marina Bay Sands casino intact in the toilet in June 2010.

However, Wong Seng Kwan, 41, was convicted and fined $2,000 in December 2010 for dishonestly misappropriating the wallet belonging to Chinese national Sun Yan Li, and taking the $150 in it. He is appealing against the conviction.

In the grounds of decision issued on Tuesday, District Judge Kamala Ponnampalam said that she found Wong's account 'incredulous, fraught with internal inconsistencies and tailored to absolve him of all criminal liability'.

He claimed he stepped on the wallet and picking it up was the natural thing to do.

He was also in a hurry to go to the toilet. Anyway, it had no identification papers so he left the wallet behind in a toilet cubicle without taking anything from it.

Ms Sun, who is in her late 30s, testified that at 1am on June 10, 2010, she was seated at the baccarat table. Her wallet, with the cash, identification documents and a credit card, had been placed at the side of her seat.

When it went missing, she informed the casino staff. A check of the surveillance video showed Wong had picked it up. The wallet was never found
.

He said that he did not hand the wallet to security staff because of a previous unpleasant experience in Hong Kong. He had found a pouch at the airport there but was scolded by police for picking it up.

The judge observed that as such, picking up the wallet would certainly not be the natural thing for him to do.

THREE members of a jewellery theft syndicate were jailed on Friday for theft.

Jose G. Puna alias Banal Eduardo Cruz, 63, unemployed, Valbarez Fidel IV Martelino, 56, a tailor, and Felipe Marcos Pebenito alias Balajadia Porfirio Leabres, 53, a trader, each pleaded guilty to between two and four charges.

A district court heard that the three Filipinos stole a diamond bracelet and a pair of gold earrings totalling $11,195 at Valuemax Retail at Tampines Central on March 26.

Eight days later (April 3), they got away with two pairs of diamond earrings totalling $46,860 at Doris Vinci Shop at Centrepoint, Orchard Road. After their arrest the next day, police from the Bedok division found two silver rings in Puna's possession.

He admitted to having dishonestly taken them from a shop in Chinatown.
Puna had also made a false declaration by saying he had not entered Singapore under a different passport bearing a different name on March 24. He had thus entered Singapore illegally.

He was given a total sentence of 20 months and a $2,000 fine. Pebenito was given two years for contravening a prohibition entry order and 20 months for theft, while Martelino's sentence was 16 months.

THEY arrived here from Turkey on March 18 this year and went shopping the very next day with their fake credit cards, buying more than $360,000 worth of mostly jewellery within two days.

Erdem Yildiz, 27, was jailed for seven years by a district court on Tuesday. The Turk had pleaded guilty to 10 charges of possessing and using counterfeit American Express credit cards for then purposes of cheating. His accomplice Erdinc Vidin is at large.

Investigations revealed that at a cafe in Turkey in February , Yildiz was offered 15,000 Turkey Lira (S$11,350) by ringleader Osman Ozturk to shop abroad with fake credit cards.

Yildiz and Vidin then flew to Ukraine with a stack of white plastic cards. There, they exchanged these for fake credit cards with a contact known only as Ahmet. The next day, they flew to Thailand, where they were instructed by another accomplice named Pasha to head here.

Together, they chalked up purchases amounting to $360,034. Some of their bigger purchases include charging $56,559 to their fake credit cards at Soo Kee Jewellery and $39,808 at Goldheart in Orchard Road.

Yildiz was arrested after buying nearly $100,000 of jewellery from the Love & Co shop in Suntec City in the afternoon of March 20 after the manager raised the alarm. Police found only a diamond ring valued at $4,028, a pair of wedding band rings worth $1,088 and an Apple Macbook Pro bought for $3,398 in his room at the Fortuna Hotel in Owen Road.

The court was not told what he did with the rest of the loot but private investigators say it is usual practice for accomplices to either fly off with the items or to quickly mail these off.

A FORMER relationship manager was jailed for eight months on Tuesday for using forged documents for processing.

Indonesian national Rizkiwardhana, 38, was convicted after trial of fraudulently using two ABN AMRO remittance application forms, dated Nov 9, 2007 and Aug 22, 2008, as genuine in November 2007 and August 2008 respectively.

At the time of the offences, he was employed by the Royal Bank of Scotland which took over ABN-AMRO Bank in 2007.

The court heard that he had used a validly signed remittance form of Madam Kwee Sien Nio, an Indonesian housewife, to make another copy, instructing the remittance of US$6,300 (S$7,829) from her joint ABN Amro account with her daughter to an Indonesian bank account of a friend, Ms Rini Indriani.

The second document purportedly signed by Madam Kwee's daughter, businesswoman Alexandra Tan, was used to instruct the bank to remit US$1,500 from the pair's joint account to Ms Rini's ABN Amro account.

Ms Tan had testified that she recalled signing a blank remittance application form in 2008 after Rizkiwardhana said it was needed for her unit trust purchase. This was not true.

The two sums of money finally ended up in Rizkiwardhana's hands.

A WOMAN was found guilty yesterday of using criminal force on an SMRT station manager at a train station.

Chinese national Wang Shu Jun, 35, a permanent resident, was convicted of scratching the hands of Ms Chua Hui Keng, 28, at the Serangoon MRT station, at about 11pm last Sept 10.

The prosecution's case is that the station manager had stopped Wang and her six-year-old son at the lift for not paying the boy's train fare. When she asked Wang to follow her, the woman replied that she would return after taking her son to a friend waiting at a taxi stand.

When Ms Chua refused, an argument broke out. She then snapped some photos of Wang, who tried to snatch the camera.
In the midst of a struggle, Wang scratched the victim's hand and pulled the cord of her walkie-talkie.

In her defence, Wang, who did not have a lawyer, demanded to know what right Ms Chua had to take her picture. She admitted it was her fault the child's fare had not been paid but denied using criminal force.

District Judge Eugene Teo adjourned the case to July 12 for sentencing. The maximum penalty is three months' jail and up to $500 in fines.

A 35-year-old sales assistant was charged today for using criminal force on an SMRT (Singapore Mass Rapid Transit) staff at Serangoon MRT station.
On Sep 10 last year, Wang Shu Jun, a Singapore permanent resident, attempted to enter the MRT station using only one EZ-link fare card for both herself and her five-year-old son.
A female station manager on duty took a photograph of Wang after she refused to return to the control station to pay the fare, reported the Shin Min Daily News.
The two women got into an altercation as Wang flew into a rage and attempted to grab the camera from the manager, Chua Hui Keng.
Chua suffered scratches on her arms as a result.
In her defence in court, Wang said she had forgotten to bring her son's EZ-link card as she was in a hurry.

Her friend, who stays in Serangoon, had agreed to look after her son as Wang was having a night out with some friends that night.
But it was already 11pm and she was in a rush, said Wang.
Wang told the court that she asked Chua if she could pay a 'deposit' of $50 and return later, or if Chua could walk with them to meet her friend first, but she had refused.

Bedok murder-suicide: Man suspected wife of having affair

Tue, Jun 28, 2011

SINGAPORE - The case of a husband and wife found dead in Bedok last year has been determined to be a murder-cum-suicide.
The case happened on March 18 last year at about 6.30pm. The court has prohibited any details which may allow the couple's two young daughters to be identified.
The Shin Min Daily News reported that the 38-year-old man stabbed his wife, 34, in the lift, before jumping to his death from the 12th storey of a HDB at Block 75, Bedok North Road.
<!-- Start Photo Gallery --> <table width="620" align="center" border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1"> <tbody> <tr> <td style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: bold; font-size: 14px; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; color: rgb(51, 102, 204);" colspan="5">Husband and wife found dead in Bedok

<!-- End Photo Gallery --> According to a Court inquiry, the couple, who were Malaysians, were having problems in their marriage at the time. She wanted a divorce, and he had suspected that his wife was having an affair.
She also told him that she did not want custody of their two children, aged 8 and 10, who were staying with relatives in Malaysia.
Asked sister-in-law to take care of kids
The couple met each other in Singapore in 1998, but he returned to Johor in 2009 to start a business. His wife remained in Singapore and worked as a shop assistant at a convenience store.
The couple did not get to see each other often.
Afterthe topic of divorce was broached, the husband often drove to Singapore - alone or with the kids - to try and persuade his wife to change her mind. But his efforts were fruitless.

</pagebreak></p> According to the Chinese news daily, on March 18 last year, the husband had driven the kids to his sister-in-law's place, where his wife was staying.
After dropping off the kids and asking his sister-in-law to take care of them, he asked his wife to come out of the house on the pretext of discussing child custody issues.
However, in the lift, they had a massive argument where the man drew a 22-centimetre-long blade and stabbed his wife in the chest.
He then ran out of the lift at the 12th storey and jumped to his death.
Police investigations showed that he was emotionally distraught, based text messages and phone calls that he had made to his sister-in-law and relatives leading up to the fateful night, reported Wanbao.
He had been particularly upset that his wife did not want custody of their children.
Original plan was to kill self and kids
According to Shin Min, the husband's original plan was to kill himself and his kids, but he changed his mind after the kids told him that they 'did not want to die'.
Based on messages retrieved from his phone by the police, he had sent a text message to his wife, telling her to take care and that 'their spirits will be with her'.
He also sent another message hinting that it is the last she will hear from him.

But his plans changed when he asked his daughters in the car if 'they were willing to die', and they said no, reported Wanbao.
</pagebreak></p> Wife's colleague denies affair, but admits attraction
A male colleague of the wife has admitted that they were attracted to each other, but denied that they had started an affair.
The 32-year-old deliveryman who was also married, said they had both decided that they would seek a divorce from their spouses before starting a relationship.
Therefore, when the incident happened, their status were still as 'good friends', he said.

SINGAPORE: Eight Indonesians were arrested in a joint operation conducted by Singapore Customs (SC), the Gurkha Contingent, the Police and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority on June 28.

A total of 338 packets of illegal cigarettes were seized.

The total duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) involved exceeded S$2,000 and the estimated street value of the cigarettes is more than S$3,000 in this operation.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, SC said Yew Tee has been an area of concern for contraband activities with buyers continuing to support peddling activities there.

These cigarettes were being sold to approaching passers-by near Yew Tee Industrial Estate along Woodlands Road by suspected immigration offenders at S$5 per packet.

This is less than half the price of legal, duty-paid cigarettes sold in retail outlets.

Enforcement officers raided the area at about 10pm and caught the peddlers by surprise.

While some of the cigarettes were hidden in the forested area nearby, others were thrown on the ground by the peddlers trying to escape.

The seven men and a woman arrested, during the one and a half hour operation, were aged between 21 and 39 years old.

The woman, who is a maid working in Jurong, was also wanted for a police offence committed previously.

Five of the men were immigration offenders and two were overstayers.

From January to June 2011, SC has conducted five major operations, arresting 25 peddlers and 35 buyers.

During the raids, their make-shift homes were also destroyed to prevent them from returning to the forested area.

SC warns that buying, selling, storing and dealing with duty-unpaid goods are serious offences under the Customs Act and the GST Act.

Repeat offenders can be fined up to 40 times the amount of duty and GST evaded and/or jailed for up to six years.

Worker, who climbed crane in protest, charged

A FOREIGN worker is said to have entered a construction site at Changi South Avenue 2 on Monday morning and climbed to the top of a 30m-tall crane. Yang Wei, 27, a Chinese national, was charged on Wednesday with criminal trespass.

According to a police news release on Tuesday, he scaled the crane to express his unhappiness over a salary dispute with his former employers, who are believed to be operating at the construction site. He threatened not to come down unless his demands were met. Only after nearly two hours of persuasion by a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) officer, did he descend at 10.10am.

Yang was not authorised to enter the construction site. He is also said to have committed the offence of criminal trespass despite knowing that the dispute had already been referred to the MOM for resolution and the matter was being looked into.

A Shin Min Daily News reporter saw two co-workers climbing up the crane in safety gear to hand Yang a harness and helmet. It was also reported that a company's representative also went up with about $4,000 to show the protesting worker that there was money to pay him. That is said to be the amount of salary arrears in dispute. But it was not stated if any money exchanged hands.

This was in 2009, when Kumaeroh, who goes by only one name, was eight months into her job. She was preparing the girl for school on Sept 23 when she snapped without provocation, grabbed a knife from the kitchen and started stabbing the child.

Then she took a chopper and slashed the girl on her wrist.

On Monday, Kumaeroh, now 26, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted culpable homicide and was jailed eight years by the High Court.

The maximum penalty is 15 years.

The victim in the attack, who cannot be named, is now in Primary 3. She has recovered, but still neither eats well nor is comfortable with strangers, said her mother, aged 42.
