Japanese national fined over fatal accident

By Elena Chong, Court Correspondent

A JAPANESE financial controller was fined $6,000 and banned from driving for five years for causing the death of a motorcyclist in a road traffic accident.

Goto Shobun, 37, pleaded guilty to negligently causing the death of Mr Ting Ee Boey, 50, while making a right turn from Lornie Road into Thomson Road on Aug 23, 2009.

The court heard that he had failed to keep a proper lookout at the signalised cross-junction and encroached into the path of the motorcyclist who was proceeding straight from the opposite direction. Mr Ting died about 14 hours later of head injuries.

Shobun's lawyer told the court in mitigation that the accident occurred as a result of a momentary lapse of concentration.

He said his client, who has a law degree in Japan, has a spotless driving record, and is due to be posted out by end-month.

Shobun could have been jailed for up to two years or fined or jailed and fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.

Man escapes death penalty for assault and robbery

By Selina Lum

A SARAWAKIAN man, one of two who assaulted a Chinese national while robbing him in 2008, escaped the gallows on Tuesday after the Court of Appeal ruled that he was not guilty of murder.

The three-judge appeal court found that Galing Kujat, 24, had intended only to commit robbery and did not share his accomplice's subsequent intention to commit murder.

The court set aside Galing's murder conviction and convicted him of a lesser charge of robbery with hurt, which carries a jail term of between five and 20 years, and at least 12 strokes of the cane. The case was sent back to the High Court for sentencing.

In July last year, Galing and Jabing Kho, 26, were sentenced to the mandatory death penalty for the murder of Mr Cao Ruyin, a construction worker.

Jabing had struck the Chinese national on the head with a tree branch with such force that Galing saw their 40-year-old victim's head crack open. An autopsy found that Mr Cao suffered 14 fractures to his skull.

Both men appealed against their murder convictions. The Court of Appeal dismissed Jabing's appeal, saying he was rightly convicted of murder as there was clear evidence that he had intentionally inflicted the fatal injuries.

Three men jailed for casino offences

By Khushwant Singh

FOR trying to evade paying the $100 entry fee at the Marina Bay Sands casino, Loh Chet Ling, 25, will spend the next two weeks in jail. His friend, Ong Kok Mun, 24, who allowed him to use his identity card, received a similar sentence.

Over at another district court, Cheah Thiam Chai, 43, a Malaysian, was jailed seven months for cheating another punter of $500 in chips and for entering the Resorts World Sentosa casino while there was an exclusion order in force.

District Judge Jill Tan heard that Ong and Loh hatched the impersonation plan as the latter wanted to visit the Marina Bay Sands casino for free. On Aug 19 2010, Ong paid the $100 casino entry fee at 7.15pm using his Singapore Civil Defence Force identity card as his 'ticket'.

A little after 9pm, he left its premises. At 1am, Loh was caught by security personnel making use of his friend's identity card to enter the casino.

District Judge Sarjit Singh heard that Cheah was caught stealing casino chips at Resort Worlds Sentosa in 2010. His punishment included a casino ban for five years, yet he went there on May 6, 2011.

The next day, he returned and cheated a punter at a baccarat table, of $500 in chips, by insisting that it was the winnings of a friend who had asked him to keep an eye on the bet. Video footage revealed the lie but he had left the casino by then. The Malaysian was nabbed in the casino the next day on May 8, 2011.

THE Indonesian had 16 songbirds in his pockets at the Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal. That same day, a Malaysian hid 15 poodle pups in a special compartment in the back seat of his car as he drove into Woodlands Checkpoint.

On Friday, both pleaded guilty to bringing in these pets without the permission of the director-general of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).

Ho Han Hong, 59, of Tanjung Pinang in Batam, was jailed 2 1/2 months while Muhammad Daniel Shah Lai Abdullah, 30, of Selangor, was jailed 4 1/2 months.

AVA's prosecutor Yap Teck Chuan told the district court the import of birds from Indonesia is currently prohibited due to the outbreak of bird flu there. He said that Ho was a bird trader and was bringing in the Oriental white-eye songbirds - known as mata puteh in Malay - on May 16, for sale to a Singaporean at $25 each.

The Indonesian had been convicted and jailed for three weeks in August 2009 for smuggling in 50 mata puteh birds. Also heard on Friday in the same court, was the case against Muhammad Daniel. The jobless man was to be paid RM$800 ($326) for each successful delivery of the pups to Singapore.

He told investigators that a Malaysian dog breeder by the name of Fei Chai had provided the Proton Wira car and told him to drive into Singapore immediately as the pups had been sedated. Once he cleared the checkpoint, someone would contact him to take delivery of the dogs. As a precaution against the spread of rabies, those bringing in dogs from Malaysia require a licence from AVA.

Woman arrested at MBS for soliciting

SHE was loitering at the lobby of the Marina Bay Sands (MBS) hotel in the wee hours of last Saturday, and struck up a conversation with a security guard.

But it was business, and not friendship, on the mind of the 32-year-old Vietnamese woman.

After some chat, she offered the security guard sexual services in exchange for $400, and persisted even after he declined.

He finally identified himself and detained her. She was later handed over to the police, who arrested her that night.

If found guilty of soliciting, she can be fined up to $1,000. Repeat offenders can be fined up to $2,000, jailed up to six months, or both.

In October last year, police nabbed another Vietnamese woman at the hotel for the same offence.

She had offered sexual services to a police officer, who was dressed in plain clothes.

She was also arrested.

BETWEEN June and November last year, Wong Siew Teng, 30, took cash and jewellery amounting to $1.1 million from Taka Jewellery and its customers. She was then a branch supervisor at the Kovan outlet.

On Thursday, the petite Malaysian was jailed five years for criminal breach of trust and for laundering her criminal proceeds at the Resorts World Sentosa casino.

The court heard that some time in last June, she took two diamond rings from the shop and pawned them for $10,200. She won at the casino and redeemed the items and returned them to the shop. A week later, she did the same with another diamond ring as won again.

Her winning streak did not last and she was soon over her head and unable to redeem the pawned jewellery. The more she tried to win, the greater her losses and in November, Taka went to the police over discrepancies in the sales records of its Kovan outlet.

Investigations then revealed that she misappropriated a total of 109 pieces of jewellery belong either to Taka or its clients. The amount of cash she embezzled came up to $64,000

The items were pawned by her on 46 occasions at the Big Max, Valuemax or Moneymax pawnshops. The $260,000 she obtained from these pawnshops were converted into gambling chips.

Arguing for a shorter sentence, defence counsel Sukdave Singh said his client had no previous brush with the law either here or in Malaysia. She had acted out of character as she was feeling depressed after being jilted by her boyfriend, the lawyer added.

Teen fined for going into women's loo to film victim

By Khushwant Singh

FIVE days after he filmed a woman using the toilet in Sembawang Sun Plaza, Wong Poy Hao, 17, had a go at it again on Jan 16 2011 - this time at a mall in Punggol.

The 18-year-old woman screamed when she saw a hand with a mobile phone above her cubicle. Her boyfriend, 20, who was waiting for her outside, rushed in.

Wong, a Malaysian, was on Tuesday fined $1,000 after he pleaded guilty to committing criminal trespass in the women's loo with the intention of insulting the modesty of the victim.

A district court heard that after being found out, he remained in the cubicle despite the couple knocking on the door several times demanding he come out.

When he finally opened the door minutes later, the couple checked his cellphone and found two video clips taken five days earlier of an unknown woman. There was no footage of the victim herself and the couple let him go after noting down his particulars.

The next day, on Jan 17, she changed her mind after seeing Wong manning the chicken rice stall in the food court in Punggol Plaza.

The victim, who works as a telephone operator in the vicinity, called the police and he was arrested.

A MALAYSIAN tourist, who stole two $100 chips from another visitor at the Marina Bay Sands casino was caught only after she returned about a month later.

On Tuesday, Thng Lai Toh, 54, was fined $1,500 by a district court. She had pleaded guilty to stealing the $200 in chips from Ms Nguyen Thi Ngoc Thuy, 31, a visitor from Vietnam.

A district court heard that at 2.30pm on May 18 this year, Ms Nguyen was playing at the roulette table. Thng, who had blown whatever money she had brought with her, saw that the Vietnamese woman had placed five $100 chips at the side of the betting table.

The next time Ms Nguyen stood up and reached out to place her bet, the older woman also reached out and filched two of the chips placed at the side. Thng moved away immediately. She lost the loot at another table and left the casino.

Ms Nguyen, who noticed that two of her chips had gone missing, informed casino staff and closed-circuit television footage showed clearly that Thng was the culprit.

When she returned to the casino on June 13, security staff recognised her through a surveillance camera and she was detained and handed over to the police.
