major traffic jam on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). -- ST PHOTO

A MOTORCYCIST died on Monday following a collision which also
involved two cars on the west-bound Pan Island Expressway.
The 29-year-old rider was flung from his bike, hit by a lorry
and pinned under its right rear-wheel.

The accident, which happened at around 7am just before the
Eng Neo Avenue exit, led to three out of the expressway's four
lanes to be closed to traffic, causing a 20-km jam that took four
hours to clear. Cars travelling in the direction of Tuas were snarled
from Eng Neo all the way to Simei.

Road accidents leave traffic jams around the city
by Tanya Fong
05:55 AM Jan 18, 2011

SINGAPORE - A number of accidents led to major traffic jams in some parts of Singapore, including the PIE, yesterday morning, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).
Traffic on the PIE in the direction of Jurong was backed up due to a fatal accident involving a motorcycle, two cars and a lorry.
The SCDF said it received a call about the accident, which happened near the Eng Neo exit, at about 7.03am.
SCDF paramedics had to free the motorcycle rider - a man in his early 30s - from under the right rear tyre of the lorry where he was pinned. He was pronounced dead at 7.40am.
Hotline callers told MediaCorp that their journey to work took close to one and a half hours as a result of the ensuing jam.
In an earlier accident, at about 6.21am, a white van overturned along the PIE towards Tuas, after the Eunos exit.
Although its driver, a man in his 40s, appeared uninjured, he was sent to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital when he complained of pains.
At about 8.40am, an accident involving a taxi happened along Lornie Road, below the MacRitchie Viaduct.
The taxi passenger was injured and taken to the National University Hospital (NUH).
At around the same time, a car and a motorcycle collided at the junction of Corporation Road and Boon Lay Drive.
The motorcycle rider injured his leg and was also sent to the NUH. Tanya Fong

Motorbike goes up in flames along Benjamin Sheares Bridge, causing a jam on ECP

Posted on 14 Jan 2011
A bike went up in flames along the ECP
towards Changi today (Jan 14), along the
Benjamin Sheares Bridge. The incident
resulted in a peak hour jam as motorists
were forced to avoid the centre lane of
the expressway. A STOMPer witnessed the
incident from his office in the Central
Business District. "I noticed the fire and the
smoke at about 5:35pm and the entire ECP
was jammed up. "The middle lane was closed
off to traffic, as that was where the bike was
burning." Another STOMPer, Ron, took a video
and told STOMP that he was travelling in the
opposite direction of the ECP when he saw a
column of smoke. "I could already see the
smoke from Fort Road and I wondered what
had occurred on the other side of the road.
"At first, I thought that it was a car that went
up in flames but I was quite shocked to
discover that it was a motorbike."
STOMPer snooppy78 also sent in a video
from the opposite side of the expressway
of the burning wreckage. STOMP contacted
SCDF and a spokesman said: "SCDF received
a call about the fire at 5:34pm. "We dispatched
a fire engine, a red rhino, two fire bikes and an
ambulance. "The fire was extinguished using
one hose rail, and was extinguished within
five minutes." "A male Malay was conveyed to
Singapore General Hospital. He suffered burns
on his right hand and left flank.
"Investigations are on-going."

In countries like taiwan, motorbikes are banned from using the expressways.
My taiwanese friends express shock at seeing motorbikes on the expressways.
Invariably, its always the motorcyclist involved in fatal accidents.

A MOTORCYCLIST died on Monday in an accident which caused a four-hour traffic jam on the Pan Island Expressway (PIE).

The 29-year-old was flung from his bike after a collision which also involved two cars, The Straits Times understands.

He was then hit by a lorry travelling in the slow lane and pinned under its right rear-wheel.

Singapore Civil Defence Force officers spent about 20 minutes freeing the unconscious man using hydraulic tools. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident, which took place at around 7am just before the west-bound Eng Neo Avenue exit, caused a rare three-lane closure which lasted more than three hours, so that the wrecked vehicles could be removed. The lorry also spilled its load onto the four-lane expressway.

Cars ground to a halt on the PIE in the direction of Tuas. Traffic was snarled from Eng Neo to Simei.

wah lan..look at that lorry...stack so high up...how can the driver see who is behind him?

is the motorcyclist tail-gating and lorry suddenly zam brake?

Actually in xpress ways...motorbikes shld be restricted to the most left hand lane...but many like to zip in and out...dangerous...

LTA should plant more flower/tree or built wall at least 5 feet tall to block the view from opposite direction. All sight seeing accident slow down the traffic also cause the accident to happen.

That lorry will be in big trouble.
1. overload
2. stack above the permited height
3. negligent
