Apple has acknowledged there's an issue with some of its latest smartphones freezing in cold weather, but says it's a fixable issue that will be solved via a software update.

Owners of the latest smartphone, which retails for as much as $1,570 before carrier contract discounts, began complaining on social media that their phones became unresponsive in cold weather, just as a cold snap was making its way across much of North America this week.

my phone has frozen like 2 or 3 times already and i’ve had to turn it off smh i blame the iphone x lmao

Users reported the keyboard would become unresponsive under certain circumstances. Some figured out that locking and unlocking the phone would manage to reset the phone and get it working again.

Many people in a Reddit thread said they noticed the problem was most pronounced when they used their phones immediately after moving outside from a warm interior.

Apple confirmed the issue in an email to CBC News on Friday, but said it will soon send out an easy fix for the problem.

"We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment," a spokesperson for the company said. "After several seconds, the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update."

On its website, Apple advises customers that its products are optimized to work best under "acceptable" temperatures, which it says is a range between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius.

The company was dogged by similar problems with previous iterations of its smartphone, which was dubbed "touch disease."

In that case, the fix involved a hardware problem that was solved by bringing the device into an Apple store, and paying a fee of almost $200 in some cases.

This time, the company is promising the solution to the problem lies in the software and will be sent to customers seamlessly via a software update.

Some iPhone X owners have apparently been having issues using their brand new devices in the cold. According to a few users on Reddit, the pricey phone would stop recognizing most of their touches as soon as they step outside. It would happen even if temperatures are still within 0 to 35 degree Celsius -- Apple's recommended ambient temperature range when using iOS devices. The issue sounds like a dealbreaker for people living cold climates or anywhere with four seasons, but based on Apple's response to The Loop, it could be fixed with a software update.

A spokesperson told the publication that it's aware of "instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment." Cupertino is already working on a fix, and while it wasn't included in the software update that gets rid of an autocorrect bug, it will be rolled out in the future.

While the spokesperson didn't explain why it happens in the first place, he said devices should only be affected for a few seconds before functioning normally again. Those who've been experiencing the problem for longer than a few seconds, however, can always lock and unlock the screen to regain full use of their new phones.

Apple
iPhone X Doesn't Work Right in the Cold, Users Say, But Apple Promises to Fix It

Just in time for winter, some users discovered a software bug causing the iPhone X to freeze up in cold weather. Disappointing, but what do you expect from a phone that only costs as much as a few cups of coffee?

“It literally takes 2 seconds from going inside to the cold outdoors and my screen stops being very responsive,” Reddit user darus214 wrote. “I try swiping on websites and it doesn’t register my finger.”

Within hours, the Reddit thread amassed more than 130 comments. Some users said they haven’t experienced the issue, while others reported having the same problem: The iPhone X works fine indoors, but suddenly goes unresponsive when taken outside into cold weather. One user reported Face ID fails outside as well.

Apple recommends that owners “Use iOS devices where the ambient temperature is between 0º and 35º C (32º to 95º F).” The company cautions that trying to use one of its gadgets outside that temperature range might “cause the device to change its behavior.” Still, as users in the Reddit thread note, and as this blogger can anecdotally attest, using an iPhone outside in the winter usually isn’t a problem.

In a statement provided to Gizmodo and others, Apple assured users an “upcoming software update” will resolve the issue, seemingly confirming Reddit’s hunch that the problem is the phone’s internal software:

“We are aware of instances where the iPhone X screen will become temporarily unresponsive to touch after a rapid change to a cold environment. After several seconds the screen will become fully responsive again. This will be addressed in an upcoming software update.”

In the meantime, users have discovered a solution so simple it’s almost charming: Simply locking, and then unlocking the screen using the phone’s physical side buttons gets the screen to be responsive again.

since ios 11.1.1 has just been released today expect the fix in either 11.1.2 or 11.2. 11.6.9 will not happen.

Mysterious ‘green line of death’ appears on some iPhone X displays

It wouldn’t be the launch of a first-generation Apple product without a few hiccups — who can forget Antennagate and Bendgate? — and the iPhone X is no different. A handful of users report that a mysterious and inextinguishable green line has appeared on their device’s display.

The above images, from Twitter users mix0mat0sis, Nate Heagy and Christian Roman, represent a few of the examples of the “green line of death” as the latter called it. No one seems to know what causes it or how prevalent it actually is. I’ve asked Apple for comment.

We can at least speculate on one part of that. iPhone Xs have a new diamond sub-pixel pattern in their displays, and as such all green sub-pixels appear in lines, while red and blue alternate. You can see that in this image taken as part of DisplayMate’s tests:

It seems likely that an electrical fault in a few phones is causing voltage to flow to all the green sub-pixels in a line. That it stretches all the way from top to bottom suggests it’s something at the edge of the display that’s sending an incorrect voltage down a few lines of pixels (if it were just one line of sub-pixels, it would appear much thinner). The line tends to be close to the right or left side of the phone, but that’s harder to diagnose.

This kind of issue always pops up in ambitious devices that use several new kinds of tech at scale. It happened to Samsung last year, except the line was pink. Even if only 0.001 percent of the displays they put together were faulty, a frequency that’s nearly impossible to test for, a few users will still end up with a bum phone.

One such user already reports that their phone was replaced at the Apple store, so it seems unlikely that this is a software issue. Is your phone showing this line? Take a picture and let us know. Then take it in to be replaced.
