After going back on his promise to purchase 6 bottles of beer if the female beer promoter could down 4 glasses of beer, the elderly man hit the woman in the face for calling him out over not fulfilling his end of the bargain.
According to a report by Lianhe Zaobao, this incident took place at around 10pm on Saturday (May 24), at a coffee shop at Jurong Gateway, Singapore. The beer promoter, 30-year-old Mia, shared that her cheeks were red and swollen while her eye was sore, due to the assault from the elderly man.
Recalling what happened that day, she explained that the elderly man was part of a table of 6 people and had made rude comments to tease her while he drank with his friends.
“There were about 6 people in his group, one of whom was a regular customer whom I knew. Everyone was quite polite, but the uncle kept saying rude things to me and asked me to drink,” she said.
The elderly man then made a bargain with her
He proposed that, if Mia drank 4 glasses of beer, he would buy 6 more bottles.
“After I drank the 4 glasses, he said he didn’t see me drink the last glass and was unwilling to fulfil his promise. Instead, another person at the same table asked me to bring 2 more bottles and gave me money for the drinks,” she added.
However, the elderly man continued to hassle her in an effort to make her drink.
Feeling unsatisfied with the situation, Mia told the elderly man that he had no credibility (as he did not fulfil his end of the bargain). This angered the elderly man, and he pulled out a stack of money from his pocket.
Considering Mia had broken out in tears following the assault, the coffee shop manager called the police.
While it is unclear whether the police took action against the elderly man, Mia is still contemplating whether to take action against him.
The coffee shop posted CCTV footage of the incident online
Taking to their Facebook page, the coffee shop BK Eating House.Sg explained that they do not condone the elderly man’s actions. They also highlighted the fact that the man is a wealthy businessman.
They wrote, “It has come to our attention that the man involved is a coffee proprietor and the owner of a well-known juice wholesale business in Singapore. We believe that status or wealth should never be a justification for unacceptable behaviour. Everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their background.”
“While we are not at liberty to share the full details of the incident—out of consideration for those involved—we want to make one thing absolutely clear: we do not and will not tolerate violence against women under any circumstances.”
