Today is Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s one year death anniversary.
Most Singaporeans respect Mr Lee for everything he sacrificed and did for Singapore. One important trait Mr Lee possessed was his disdain for imperfection and incompetence. SMRT’s latest tragedy where two young technicians died after a train crashed into them while they were repairing the tracks is total incompetence.
If Mr Lee Kuan Yew was still alive, he would have sacked SMRT CEO Desmond Kuek after this latest fiasco. This current leaders of Singapore are simply weak and too soft on their non-performing subordinates.
When Mr Lee was in charge, anything he took charge would be tested to perfection before being released to the public. Now, everything is tested by the public and Singaporeans are made to suffer incompetence and inefficiencies.
Desmond Kuek has been given so much time to turn things around but till today, track faults and delays are the norm and worse now safety was compromised, two young lives gone. Lee Kuan Yew would have fired his sorry ass for not turning the situation around but made things worse.
Sometimes I think Singapore really miss Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s no nonsense approach to governance. He is firm, he is harsh, but he will force the people to make things work. No excuses, no apologies, he would have solved the problem no matter how difficult it was.
The current batch of Ministers need to learn from the late Mr Lee and use this steel to get things done. Stop using words to smoke Singaporean, stop talking and start delivering on results.

Not sure if LKY is 100% free from favouring his kakis. Imo, he is way, way smarter than his gay son. LKY knows where the safe seats are and will not expose his incompetent kakis
to 'red zone' seats.

In this particular case, SOP was not followed, so heads will roll for sure...
Anybody with half a brain will know that in any large organisation, there will always be operational/line staff taking risks/short cuts and trying their luck....
if everytime operational SOPs are not followed on the ground and the CEO has to go, then it doesn't matter who is the CEO (he may be the most experienced and competent person running the best MTR in the world), it is matter of luck because he has no way to do the ground supervision....that is the job of the foremen, section heads/managers, department managers; etc....
As usual Scroobal is trying to exploit this unfortunate incident to score brownie points.....truly pathetic..

The fucking incompetent Gay Loong was DPM for donkey years under his father. After all those years, he still has learned nothing and still does not have the presence and force of character that his father has. It really shows you he was never passionate about politics and he was just forced into that position because his mother told him to take over from PApa.

In most cases, the CEO dictates or influence the corporate culture. SMRT obviously does not have a safety first or strive for perfection type of corporate culture. It has a culture where corners can be cut, where incompetent and inexperienced people can be hires while experience people fired, just to save a few bucks. when you are in the business of transporting people, their safety has to be of paramount importance. If you don't believe this, just check out the corporate culture of any Indonesian Airline, versus say Qantas, SIA, BA, etc. You will see a big difference because these airlines have a higher expectation, and a superior corporate culture then those Indonesian airlines. And it comes from the top.

good u use airline CEO.....there are many aircraft accidents....how many CEO had to step down because of such accidents where hundreds of lives are lost????
when u have people, u can have the best safety system (Rules and Regulations, RA and SOPs, Enforcement etc....) but people on the ground always took risk and short cuts....
In the the marine industry, there are accidents resulting in fatalities every year...
take Keppel OM as example, a well organised set-up making tons of money each year for Keppel Corp, they also have accidents resulting in fatalities each year...
if CEO is responsible each time, there would have run out of CEO....
but I can tell u Safety is a KPI for the CEO meaning for each major accidents or fatality, his bonus will be adversely affected....
how many fatalities have SMRT suffered for u to conclude that they do not have safety first???

That is because GCT actually successfully ran a major shipping player NOL in a free market and highly competitive industry. Also GCT was not born with a silver spoon and worked his way up from Projects manager and was protege of Muhammed Sayeed. He earned every promotion he had. He is many times better then Gay Loong but still not the best we could have had.
