SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Chinese telecommunications company Huawei said on Monday it had not worked with an institute in Singapore on any projects in the specialist field of an American engineer who died mysteriously last year shortly after leaving the institute.

Britain's Financial Times said on Saturday that Shane Todd had been working on "what was apparently a joint project" between Singapore's Institute of Microelectronics, or IME, and Huawei shortly before he died last June.

His parents have said he was murdered because of his involvement in the project, which they say involved exporting sensitive military technology to China.

IME declined immediate comment.

Singapore police said they were still investigating the death of Todd, 31, and would submit their evidence to a coroner. Singaporean pathologists concluded in an autopsy last June that he died by hanging in his Singapore flat.

"IME approached Huawei on one occasion to cooperate with them in the GaN field, but we decided not to accept, and consequently do not have any cooperation with IME related to GaN," Huawei said in a statement.

Todd's area of expertise was Gallium Nitride (GaN), an advanced semiconductor material which has both commercial and military purposes. It is used in things from blue-ray disc players to military radars.

Huawei said that the development of GaN technology was commonplace across the telecommunications industry.

Reuters reviewed evidence the family presented supporting its theory a few weeks after his death, including emails, other documents and photographs.

Interviews with the family, colleagues and friends revealed conflicting views on Todd's state of mind before his death, the nature of his work and how he died.

Colleagues said that he was increasingly depressed in his last few months, but said that his concerns appeared to centre on a sense of failure about his work, and an ambivalence about returning to the United States.

Researchers in unrelated fields have also questioned how, if his work was so sensitive, he was able to take home computer files from his office. His family retrieved a hard drive which included work files in his flat.

IME is part of a network of research institutes managed by government-run Agency for Science, Technology and Research, or A*Star.

A former A*Star researcher now working in the United States pointed out that IME and other A*Star institutes were not military research organizations.

Sounds like Scroobal was being interviewed.

Scroobal being asked to prepare these plausibility for spin?

The technology had dual use. The issue is whether US technology had being transferred to the Chinese via IME without US authorization?

That's beside the point. Dual purpose technology from the US was being accessed by sinkapore's research institute and that these institutes serve as conduit for the illicit transfer of technology to China.

That's why the cops want the portable hard disk ...so that they can wipe out any info regarding Huawei's involvement with IME. Huawei could deny but the portable hard disk has the files to show Huawei's involvement with IME. Reuters was not thorough in not mentioning this.

Don't worry. The Americans are well aware of the above; that's why the US Senate is very wary of Huawei and clones.

Now who says Sinkieland is crime-free? and LEEgime is not an accomplice in the murder of Shane Todd?

USA big bully. Singapore small fly cannot do anything, Last time got drunk US solider punch Singapore civilian in parking lot and Singapore police cannot do anything but lan lan handed him over to US army. Singapore justice system got no power when it comes to USA gov people.

typical american sh!t. always trying to spin out some conspiracy when there is none and deny it when there is one. Good example is Iraq weapons of mass destruction CON-spiracy by bush and powell. can't even sort out their Kennnedy assaisination and talk c@ck here. in reality there are millions of researchers all proclaiming their work is top secret but those in research line know it is nonsense 99.9999% of time. probbaly some amrican failure killing himself and his family making it as if he was killed for some 'secret" to salvage some dubious honour. sometimes the truth hurts and the most basic reasons/evidence is staring at their face but denial is always there .

There are too many unanswered questions. The Police and IME have not been forthright. Huawei denies that they are involved in any project with IME. The files on the hard disk says otherwise.

The main issue is what role was played by sinkapore's research institutes in the illicit transfer of US technology to the Chinese.

The local expat community was actually abuzz with this murder last year. The body was found by his girlfriend (sent back to Vietnam/Pinoyland/???) and a house mate (advised by the authorities to shut up). According to one of them, it was quite obvious he was murdered before hung up to look like suicide. The FBI and Secret service flew in specially to investigate. Not picked up by the local news until now.

They PAPpy Times had no choice. It became a story in the FT and news wire. Now, it is operation denial and cover-up on the issue of sinkapore research agencies unauthorized transfer of US technology to the Chinese.

(Reuters) - A White House-ordered review of security risks posed by suppliers to U.S. telecommunications companies found no clear evidence that Huawei Technologies Ltd had spied for China, two people familiar with the probe told Reuters.

Your observations are riveting. You should send them to the FT and the family.

if you are ft in a country like china or indonesia and your neightbour died and gong an or polis tell you to shut up, you would, else you leave the country

Not in their jurisdiction right? FBI handles homeground issues, SS handles financial crime and protection duties.

FBI special agents ala moulder and scully can investigte cases overseas if the host country agree or invites them.

Special agents for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are the main investigative force of the federal government. As the FBI likes to stress, they don't have a set list of duties--the bureau prefers to describe special agents as investigators, which means a full range of responsibilities.

Uniqueness

The FBI is a law enforcement organization employing administrators, linguists, forensics experts and medical personnel. Special agents are different, as they are the frontline presence of the FBI, conducting actual investigations in the field. They don't normally analyze evidence or other scientific findings, something done by other professionals within the FBI.

No Typical Day

According to official FBI literature, agents don't have anything that can be defined as a typical set of duties. This wide variety is reflected in the different kinds of cases special agents handle and in the fact that they can be posted anywhere federal U.S law applies or is called upon for assistance.

Training

All special agents undergo 20 weeks of extensive training in Quantico, Virginia. Training covers investigative skills, firearms, fitness, self-defense and much more. It's considered quite grueling compared to normal police training, which is why there are strict age and fitness rules in place to guide FBI hiring.

In the Field

As the federal government's law enforcement agency, the FBI conducts constant investigation and interdiction of illegal activities and crime within its U.S jurisdiction. Special agents, therefore, document crime, investigate leads, gather evidence, carry out arrests and question suspects. Special agents are responsible for developing intelligence networks through informants but don't prosecute anyone, which is done by other departments.

Main Focus

Any act defined as criminal by federal law, and in most cases, any criminal act that crosses state lines, falls under FBI jurisdiction. Special agents spend significant time and resources investigating terrorism, espionage, organized crime, drug distribution, corruption, fraud and missing persons cases, among others.

Cooperation

Special agents work closely with other federal departments, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA); Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF); Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA); and Internal Revenue Service (IRS). They have close contact with customs and immigration authorities and invariably work with local law enforcement on almost every case. This entails familiarity with the procedures and duties of the agencies they work with. Special agents may travel overseas to investigate cases involving American interests abroad. Occasionally, foreign law enforcement invites FBI assistance even when the United States isn't directly involved.

Paperwork

Ask any special agent and they will explain filling paperwork and keeping accurate records are a huge part of their schedule. The bureau also goes to great lengths to separate fact from fiction, claiming the actual work of special agents relies on science and professionalism rather than gun play and stunt work. As an agency accountable to the federal government and the public, the FBI is a bureaucracy, meaning numerous regulations and rules to follow.

That's international relations. Why would the US want the Chinese to access its technology? Why can't the Chinese figure things out themselves? And sinkapore is the playdumb, two-timing the US and the Chinese.

MFA deals frequently with 2 categories of nonsense on on-off basis (1) expat suicides and (2) child custody case where one or both parties are expats of diffferent nationalities. The families will write to FBI, CIA, Congress, the Royal Mounted Police, etc. Allegation and counter-allegations will fly and all wrapped around conspiracy theories.

When Michael Fay incident surfaced, not many were not aware that it was local expat community that were constantly complaining about inaction as it was their cars that he amd his merrymen were damaging. When the shit hit the fan, they kept quiet and surreptiously let it out that one of the cars belonged to former JC Amarjeet and his wife former NMP. So naturally the spin was that the JC demanded action. None of them stepped forward. We were all made to look like idiots.

The guy was first prescribed anti- depressant when he was 22 yrs old in the US. Doctors don't dish out such drugs willy nilly. And it is not sleeping pills. Ten years later in Singapore he was seeing a doctor for the same thing.

Why murder the guy? What objective would it serve ? If he was able ro download files from his work area, what does that tell you? Was he really doing classified work. No investigation report or coroner's inquiry done, investigation not complete so why all the comments about the quality of investigation? After all we are Asians and Asians cannot tie our shoelaces without western help. Tell me when did the US allow any foreign agency to conduct any investigation on their own soil. No one does unless invited?

Hanging an able 6 footer requires sedation. The tox report will say what was in the system. The marks if any will indicate resistant.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out. one thing for sure is that no matter what happens, the parents will not accept the outcome if it suicide.

By the way, his girlfriemd was not deported.she will be there for the inquiry.

If this family was smart and the people behind it was smart, they should have kept quiet until the coronner's inquiry amd then get their lawyer to grill everyone. Knowing the local police, they would have left a few things out such as the the drive. Now the local authorities will pour resources and make it iron clad.
