Re: K Shamu warns people about the haze: Don't you curse the PAP!

To me, the whole issue is caused by high demand of cheap palm oil by consumer goods companies. They must be penalised for they are the one who earns the most and reap the most benefit frim this environment disaster. Those who have operations in Singapore must be called up and fucked! Have some peanalty imposed against them rather than paying lip service. Agri companies like Wilmar, IOI, Cargil must also be penalised as they are making money thru this environment disaster as well.

government can easily enact new legislation to jail directors of companies that cause harm in singapore. CPIB and CNB already have extra-jurisdiction reach. NEA can be given similar powers.

but this assumes the culprits are the big listed companies.

with the numerous hotspots in play, it could instead be the work of smaller independent operators who find it more profitable to strike a match than to bring in a team of bulldozers.

corrupt indonesian forestry officials and local governors are to blame. with elections approaching in indo, will SBY act against his own people?

On a positive note, we should be thankful to the Indonesians for doing us a favour by doing "annual fogging" for us on a massive scale to kill off the mosqitoes.
At least these few days we noticed that there are less mosqitoes around. Local dengue cases dropping fast , you can check with MOH. Thanks to our Indonesian neighbour once again. Terima kasih , terima kasih!

Vivian is in charge of safeguarding our environmental issues, so he is involved

Shanmugam is in charge of our diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries, so he is also involved

LHL is the commander in chief...he is involved..

He should lay the card on the table and talk direct the the Indonesian President and tie the bi-lateral issue of HAZE AND THEIR CORRUPT OFFICIAL $BILLIONS.

If the issue of ill-gotten gains of some of the Indonesian bankers here is not resolved. u can bet your last cent that the HAZE IS HERE TO STAY

I remember before the 1998 Asian crisis and before the laundered money are stashed here, there was no major issue of the haze.

I believe the Indonesian govt is punishing us on the quiet.

Sillypore gahbrament talk so big and talk so much for what?

Indonesia already made it so clear that each year Sillypore will need to pay them "protection fees".
Or else Sillypore will not "smell no smoke" for a particular days, weeks or months.

Now Sillypore LPPL, no choice need to so called "send firemen" (aka pay protection fees) over Indonesia and beg them stop the haze.

Ask Vivian this question...Is the Haze problem relates to the extradition treaty of the corrupt Indonesian bankers here.????

If he says it is not, he will be the next Disney character, PINOCCHIO..with the extended pointed nose

Re: K Shame-mugam 's mind is as hazy as the air in Sinkiepore

Any suggestion? We (both Singapore and Malaysia) break diplomatic relationship with them or we wage a war against them?

The next time a tsunami hits Sumatra, don't be a gong chee bye and offer to rebuild their homes. Fuck them.

If you want to send a diplomatic message after the disaster, say this: "We can give nothing except our condolences."

I think rich Indons parking their money in Singapore goes all the way back to the Suharto era. It's nothing new.

It's only that the money laundering has got more brazen in recent years, with the casinos and financial hubs etc. Many of those luxurious homes (Sentosa Cove) and branded boutiques (at Orchard Ion) were made for them.

It's quite obvious that they also have their fingerprints on certain megachurches in Singapore.

Re: K Shamu warns people about the haze: Don't you curse the PAP!

The reason why Singapore refuses to confront Indonesia directly is due to the legacy that was left behind by LKY. LKY had always advocated maintaining more than friendly relations with Indonesia, to the point of compromising against their misdeeds. Remember that LKY even scattered flowers over the graves of the Indonesian commandos who were responsible for bombing McDonald House and killed three innocent people? No other leaders would have even bothered to visit their grave, let alone show respect. It showed how much importance LKY placed in the relationship with Indonesia, probably due to his gratefulness to Suharto for ending the Konfrontasi. Hence, the ties between Indonesia and Singapore was strengthened for 30 years.

Now with the old man out of the action, the son who has been too dependent on him is helpless. He is probably still taking advice from his father to close both eyes to Indonesia misdeeds and let it be, rather than ignite anger from Indonesia. Hence, his cabinet are all busy talking about the problem, rather than confronting the direct source.

You would have noticed by now that Singapore often has strong words for Malaysia but never for Indonesia. Indonesia is like The Godfather to Singapore, someone that can never be criticised or commented upon.

LKY still bears a grudge against Malaysia for kicking him out of the Federation.

In fact, an analogy of the NDP on every August 9th would be that of an ex-spouse swaggering in front of you and showing off how much better he/she has been living after the divorce. Year after year after year.

LKY was petty and rigidly small-minded in domestic issues, it shouldn't be much different when it comes to regional/international issues.

Re: K Shamu warns people about the haze: Don't you curse the PAP!

I would like to point out that despite my anti-PAP sentiments, I must say this haze problem is definitely not caused by the PAP or VB. It's clearly beyond their control, or even the control of the Indonesian government for that matter. They've been burning for many years. And this time it hit SG extremely hard becoz of the weather conditions. Sure they have sent teams to Indonesia but we should all realise they can do nuts. Talking about it doesnt put out those fires.

Government reaction till now has been one of inertia and setting up useless task forces. Quick action needs to be taken, for example giving out masks would have been a stopgap measure, which would have been applauded by most Singaporeans. If the existing stockpiles are unable to meet with demand. Offering it to the young and old, while quickly sourcing for supplies while in the meantime, publicly announce to reassure Singaporeans. Instead, once again as we have seen often during Pinky's term, inaction has become their primary way of dealing with problems, as they slowly analyse the problem, solutions are for after they have decided on a course of action after much discussion and debate, and likely after the haze has gone away. That is what, pisses off most Singaporeans. My advice to Mr Vivian is doing more for Singaporeans is alot better than doing too little.

And how the video of LKY crying is repeated every NDP. He has a grudge against UMNO and I think it is still burned in his head.

But make no mistake, Suharto and LKY are equal to drinking buddies that chiong pub every Friday. It's the reason why Singapore takes a tolerant stand towards Indonesia, even though Suharto's successors keep belittling Singapore.

One have to look after ourselves....since the "ponding" at Orchard Rd, the various breakdowns of the trains, plus the SARS outbreak...when I go out I carry a certain "essential emergency" things in my work bag, which in the past already contain certain emergency things, like, plastesr, medicate oil, $10 note, coins to make calls or phone cards, panadols, lozenges, sweets & even Birth Control you know what ( ha ha ha) etc.

I have stocked up since SARS days, face masks, hospital grade ones, common ones & even commercial grade one that comes in a box of 10 & had even consider buying gas mask off surplus army stores on-line, why not?? Have even stock up now on mosiquito coils, OFF ( the sprays), mosquito sprays..

We can not blame the government for everything...they are not READY..we have to be ready...

If Vivian got balls, he will declare war... otherwise, its all talk no action.....

SINGAPORE: Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan said Singapore will insist on definitive action at the emergency haze meeting in Jakarta on Thursday.

In his Facebook post, Dr Balakrishnan said no country or corporation has the right to pollute the air at the expense of Singaporeans' health and well-being.

He said urgent and definitive action by Indonesia is needed to tackle the problem at source.

Lets see if he is NATO....

NATO - No action. Talk Only.......

You are spot-on for this. LKY had the intention to spite Malaysia, and Indonesia was the perfect mistress. Strongest military in the region, only the Thais could match them and just nice, a dictator ruling the nation with an iron fist, a perfect similarity to himself. I'm not surprised if he feels Suharto is a man after his own heart.

One mistress that he successfully slept with was Brunei, but alas, Brunei lacks the economic and military influence to counter Malaysia. So Brunei was relegated to mistress number 2, while Indonesia was promoted to first mistress.
