Re: Vivian Balakrishnan news conference LIVE

You need cloud, which is essentially water vapor. Without cloud, you can't seed any rain.

bro,
we are in the tropics where ambient humidity is over 90%
no water vapour in the air???

Taken from his facebook. https://www.facebook.com/k.shanmugam.page/posts/551235868256281

Well Singapore can't do anything--then what is "Count on Me Singapore"?

Shanmugam is a clown, his response is even more disappointing than VB

At least VB is saying "we are helpless and at a loss of what to do -- here are some options we have thought of, but we can't implement them yet"

But Shanmugam is saying "we are helpless so all of you should shut up and stop complaining, we are helpless and its a fact"

Re: K Shamu warns people about the haze: Don't you curse the PAP!

To me, the whole issue is caused by high demand of cheap palm oil by consumer goods companies. They must be penalised for they are the one who earns the most and reap the most benefit frim this environment disaster. Those who have operations in Singapore must be called up and fucked! Have some peanalty imposed against them rather than paying lip service. Agri companies like Wilmar, IOI, Cargil must also be penalised as they are making money thru this environment disaster as well.

What penalty? A slap on the wrist?

If VB wants to show that he is serious, go and get NEA to fine them $2 billion. Not some puny shit like a few million dollars. That's nothing to them. They profit much more from continuing their fucked up activities.

PTUI!
VB is sprouting bullshit! cloud seeding requires silver iodide or dry ice to 'grow' the cloud! you don't need cloud for cloud seeding!
PTUI!

Let me give the girl Vivian a hint. To seed clouds, you just need a non-toxic, crystalline inert compound. It doesn't even have to be insoluble like AgI. In fact, liquid propane and table salt has even been used before in conjuction with low temperature, to produce the minute ice crystals at medium altitude needed for cloud formation. Seeding cloud is even easier than getting into Parliament. Fuck, he should get out of Parliament if he doesn't even know how to seed clouds.

Vivian is in charge of safeguarding our environmental issues, so he is involved

Shanmugam is in charge of our diplomatic relations with neighbouring countries, so he is also involved

Re: K Shame-mugam 's mind is as hazy as the air in Sinkiepore

Look at the defeatist hollow mindset of the million dollar minister above. Haven't the PAPpies always since independence talked big and talked down on our neighbours? That we are a small but potent force not to be pushed around. That we always punch above our own weight. So how about showing some teeth here?

It is not that we have no recourse or we are just price takers. It is that the PAPpy govt are soft in the knees. For all the loud trumpeting and hollow boast the past decades, that we can take on others who are bigger than our size, it is just nothing but an idle claim. The PAPpy govt really ain't got no xxxxx between their legs.

The real reason why Sinkiepore doesn't dare bring this up to international authorities....

that's why all hot air. SAF is damn useless. spend billions of dollars on arms and hundred of generals for what???? Indonesia just spend a few cents on match sticks and it is enough to bring us to our knees.

And the company is owned by Singaporeans.

World’s largest sovereign wealth fund divests from palm oil companies

Wilmar, named the “worst company in the world” by Newsweek, and 22 other oil palm companies are considered to be responsible for tropical deforestation, according to the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG). GPFG’s investments in the palm oil industry are reduced by more than 40 per cent.

“This is a major step forward and a victory for the remaining rainforests. One of the world’s biggest investors sends a clear signal to the oil palm industry that its destructive practices are unacceptable,” says Nils Hermann Ranum at Rainforest Foundation Norway.

The GPFG annual report for 2012 was launched in Oslo today, and reveals that the activities of Wilmar International Ltd, Astra International Tbk PT and 21 other oil palm companies are incompatible with the Fund’s policy on risk related to climate change and tropical deforestation. As a consequence all stakes in the 23 oil palm companies were sold in 2012.

“In the first quarter of 2012 we sold our stakes in 23 companies that by our reckoning produced palm oil unsustainably. Before reaching this decision, we reviewed a number of companies contributing to tropical deforestation through their involvement in the palm oil industry in Malaysia and Indonesia,” the annual report reads.

Important victory
Rainforest Foundation Norway has been campaigning against investments in notorious drivers of deforestation since many years back and applauds the results.

“The Norwegian Pension Fund now confirms that the oil palm sector is responsible for severe environmental damage on the rainforest. This move by the GPFG is a victory for the environment and for those who have fought for this over years. Now other investors should follow the example,” says Nils Hermann Ranum.

The organisation has consistently and successfully been pushing for reduced GPFG investments in the oil palm sector and a reduced consumption of unsustainable palm oil by Norwegian food producers.

Today’s results come in addition to the reduction by two thirds of palm oil in Norwegian food products announced last year.

40% decrease in oil palm investments
In March 2012, Rainforest Foundation Norway launched the report Beauty and the Beast: Norway’s investments in rainforest protection and rainforest destruction where seven sectors responsible for massive deforestation and human rights violations in tropical forests were identified.

The report documented that the GPFG invested more than USD 13 billion in high-risk sectors, among which the oil palm investments accounted for more than USD 764 million.

After the recent divestments, the amount invested in the oil palm sector by December 31 2012 is approximately USD 450 million, a 40% decrease.

The oil palm sector is the only high-risk sector where significant changes can be seen in the annual report.
“Now that GPFG has proved that it takes rainforest destruction caused by the oil palm industry seriously, we are eager to see a similar approach towards other industries responsible for massive rainforest destruction, like oil and gas, mining, timber and pulp,” Ranum says.

Worrying investments in Sime Darby
Although the overall reduction in palm oil investments is positive, there is a lack of coherence in GPFG’s approach. Rainforest Foundation Norway is very concerned about the increased investments in oil palm giant Sime Darby (Malaysia). Between 2011 and 2012 the GPFG investments in Sime Darby quadrupled.

“Sime Darby is infamous for illegal land clearing, violent clashes with local communities, illegal forest fires and for threatening the last orangutan habitats. Sime Darby is also expanding into the African rainforest, an extremely worrying trend in the oil palm industry. This does not merit increased Norwegian public investments,” Ranum says.

On the topic of Vivian getting out of Parliament..

.. He has found himself in the middle of some high-profile controversies recently. First the issue with the WP hawker centres, then the dengue outbreak (10,000 cases!) and now the haze crisis (historical record PSI!).

I imagine that if he stays on in his GRC, he would be one of the most vulnerable targets come 2016. Seems like he may have to engineer a move to a safer GRC, or redraw the boundaries to include one or two more popular members (like Lily Neo) in his team. Of course, he might get lucky and the WP might decide not to contest there, instead leaving it to either SDP or NSP. This was how Mah Bow Tan escaped the last time round even though he was in an equally if not more vulnerable position.
