NEW DELHI – A footbridge near the main stadium for the Commonwealth Games collapsed Tuesday, injuring 23 construction workers and putting the event in further jeopardy less than two weeks before the opening ceremony.

The footbridge leading to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was still under construction. Five people were seriously injured and taken to hospitals, police officer H.G.S. Dhaliwal said.

The stadium, which is to host the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics during the Oct. 3-14 games, was to be connected to a parking lot by the bridge.

It was the latest setback to New Delhi's troubled preparations for the Commonwealth Games, which brings together more than 7,000 athletes and officials from the 71 countries and territories in the commonwealth every four years.

Earlier in the day, Commonwealth Games Federation president Michael Fennell contacted the Indian government and urged them to finish work on the athletes' village, which many have called "unlivable."

"Many nations that have already sent their advanced parties to set up within the village have made it abundantly clear that, as of the afternoon of September 20th, the Commonwealth Games Village is seriously compromised," Fennell said in a statement. "The CGF has asked the Cabinet Secretary to immediately deploy the necessary resources to fix all the outstanding issues to an acceptable level."

The athletes' village is due to open on Thursday. The Times of India newspaper reported that only 18 of 34 residential towers at the village are complete.

New Zealand team manager Dave Currie, speaking before the bridge collapse, said the games may not go ahead.

"In the time frame that is left, unless there is tremendous effort and energy and problem-solving ability to get it done, it's going to be extremely hard to get across the line," Currie told New Zealand radio network newstalkZB. "If the village is not ready and athletes can't come, obviously the implications of that are that (the event) is not going to happen."

Currie said New Zealand would consult with other countries before making a final decision on whether it will take part in the games.

"That's not a decision that we'll make (alone), but there are some realities," he said.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key also weighed in.

"The areas (of concern) aren't insurmountable although there are real concerns about whether they can be achieved in the timeframe," he said, adding that it was "unlikely that New Zealand would make a call that other countries weren't prepared to make."

The buildup to the Commonwealth Games has been plagued by problems with construction of venues and infrastructure falling behind schedule, causing concern over the safety and quality of the buildings and speculation of corruption in the awarding of contracts and structural compliance certificates.

But the delays in construction have been overshadowed more recently by safety concerns, heightened on the weekend after two unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle shot and wounded two tourists near the Jama Masjid, one of India's biggest mosques.

Other countries also voiced concern about the athletes' village.

Commonwealth Games Scotland said the area allocated to the team was "unsafe and unfit for human habitation," while Commonwealth Games England said "there is a lot to be done in the village and this needs to be done with some urgency so that it is ready for the arrival of our first athletes on Friday."

Australia's chef de mission, retired marathon runner Steve Moneghetti, said that Indian organizers "have got two days to do what's probably going to take about two weeks."

Fennell said advance parties from the international Commonwealth Games Associations had been impressed with the international zone and main dining area within the village, but the condition of the residential zone shocked the majority of them.

"Despite (the CGAs) attempts to work with the organizing committee in a constructive manner since arriving on Sept. 15, significant operational matters remain unaddressed," Fennell said. "The problems are arising because deadlines for the completion of the village have been consistently pushed out. Now, the high security around the site, while vital, is slowing progress and complicating solutions."

CGF chief executive Mike Hooper said organizers had not lived up to promises on delivery dates.

"The conditions continued to be appalling and so we felt the matter needed to be elevated. That is why our chairman spoke to top Indian government officials," Hooper said Tuesday in New Delhi. "Organizing committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi now tells me that the cabinet secretary took a round of the village and assured that everything possible would be done."

Hooper said newspaper reports of human excrement around the village were true, but organizing committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot said the situation at the village was normal.

"All games face such problems and they will be resolved before the athletes come in," Bhanot said. "These are not going to affect the games in any way as all venues are ready to host the games."

i found this from the above article:

Speaking at a news conference in Delhi, Lalit Bhanot, secretary-general of the Delhi organizing committee, said the authorities understood the concerns shown by some member countries and the Commonwealth Games Federation. But he suggested that the complaints could be due to “cultural differences.”

“Everyone has different standards about cleanliness,” he said. “The Westerners have different standards, we have different standards.”

Mr. Bhanot said the situation was “under control” and that he was “sure and confident” that cleaning in the residential areas would be complete by the time teams start arriving Thursday.

LOL! typical indian FT excuse when things cock up. they will get into a philosophical argument about semantics.

Lets be fair to the Indians. They were only told in Jan this year that the Game will be held in Delhi. There is also a labour shortage and coupled with the fact that there no tertiary institutions to push out qualified professionals such as engineers. The world should applaud the Indians for managing to build a footbridge. Its collapse due to a single loose pin is understandable. Prior to this no one has built a bridge. Note the Indian govt's resolve in helping Somali piracy. Its immaterial that on their first foray they mistook a Thai fishing vessel as a pirate's mothership and blew it to smittereens. The fact that they are prepared to open fire speaks volumes of a determined people. Errors are just part of the equation.

These are just some outstanding examples of the Indian achievement on a world stage. Please add more.

but did they say the magic words" no problem"?

Forget about the Commonwealth Games.:o What is a collapsed bridge compared with a collapsed building? At least the big structures, stadiums, Games Village etc are structurally sound and not about to collapse.

Any serious discussion on India's achievements on a world stage must include India's exploits in space- lunar missions and soon-to-be manned space exploration:D So far so good.:D

British student dies after swimming in Ganges
Thu Jul 01 2010 13:51:24 GMT+0800 (Malay Peninsula Standard Time) by IANS

London, July 1 (IANS) A British gap-year student died in India, days after swimming in the river Ganges.
Sam Banks, 20, collapsed with severe sickness and diarrhoea. By the time he was taken to a hospital in Indian capital New Delhi, he was dead.

“I understand from friends out there that he (Sam) had been swimming in the Ganges,” The Sun Thursday quoted Sam’s father Graham as saying.

“He was a fantastic young man, with hundreds of friends, and was so excited about India. He’d been saving up for a year - it was the first time he had been out of Europe.”

A postmortem examination in India failed to detect the cause of his death. His body has been flown to Steep, Hants, for a second autopsy.

The river Ganges is one of the dirtiest rivers in India, with untreated sewage and industrial chemicals being dumped into it.

Sam’s mother Louise said: “We’re devastated. He had such a bright future.”

A day before he died Sam learnt he had been accepted to study film at the London College of Communication.

Indians don't swim. (Since when have you heard Indians winning swimming medals in any games.) They bathe in the Ganges, head above water. The British student was actually silly enough to swim there. When one really swims, regardless of how good a swimmer one is, one is bound to take in some water through the nose. When that water is from the Ganges, pray Hare Krishna.

oh wow, so it must be very great to be a hindu?

So even before the Jews talk about Abraham, Moses and other biblical figures and the Christians talking about Jesus Christ, the Hindus are already praying to their gods and telling stories about their heroes - Rama and Arjuna.

You go to hell with your excuses for the Ah neh!

They are so lame and dirty, that they still can't get their drinking water to 'drinkable' standards up to today!

So will their ancient gods appear and use their divine powers to repair the bridge?

More likely their ancient gods struck down the bridge in wrath. More than half a billion people struggling with poverty and they want to nuke Pakistan, send rocket to space and host Commonwealth Games. Besides cricket, hockey and shooting, Indians are not into or up there with any other sports anyway.
