Commissioner of Police is very mad with the netizens

I hope LKY gets to read this...even if he was strapped to tubes in a hospital bed, he would get up to repeat his lecture on 'plain english' at Civil Service College! "Gravitas"??...I can't stop laughing!

What's "gravitas"? Serious question.

I reckon he/she means number 2.

grav·i·tas (grv-täs) KEY

NOUN:

1. Substance; weightiness: a frivolous biography that lacks the gravitas of its subject.
2. A serious or dignified demeanor: "Our national father figure needs gravitas, [but] he's pitched himself as the kid brother" (John Leo).

Gravitas was one of the Roman virtues, along with pietas, dignitas and virtus. It may be translated variously as weight, seriousness, dignity, or importance, and connotes a certain substance or depth of personality.

"Beneath the policeman’s gravitas beats a heart of gold"??...try replacing any of the above words instead of gravitas and see if it makes any sense!...shocking!!

Exactly. It has been wrongly applied.

This was probably the intention. "Beneath the Policeman's serious and tough demeanour lies a heart of gold"

This idiot must have passed himself of as a bilingual where his master language is Mandarin and not English. In the 90s this problem surfaced as SAP school output started to hit the workforce. It was thought better to hire bilingual candidates in PR and media roles. In the civil service the same occurred but it was quickly corrected as these chaps tend to memorise by rote and the context became an issue. I once came across a serious and good article in Tangent where I saw something similar.

Back then in NKF Durai was famous for writing emails with 'bombastic' English.
These jialiaobees got too much free time on their hands

Ah-em. Since when is Dick Lee incomporable? Are they mistaking him for ex PM/SM/MM Lee?

Perhaps somewhere along the line, he/she may have come across the term "Tom's Dick is Harry".......................

Agreed. Examples of good usage:

1. Scroobal has the gravitas to talk about 'insider' stories in PAP and govt.

2. Gaga Rastaffar has the gravitas to talk about shitskin Ah Nehs.

3. PAPsmearer has the gravitas to lambast the PAP and HDB for making perpetual 'tenants' of 90% of Sinkies.

4. Alamaking's gravitas about the collection and use of reputation points is unimpeachable.

etc etc.

So ironic they got someone with a DICK for a name to be performing for the night. Just wonder how many dicks amongst those men present that night did Esther had a mouth on?

The Commissioner also kiasi. Took the initiative to distance himself from the woman. Maybe the Missus giving him an earful after seeing the picture.
