'CIA created ISIS', says Julian Assange as Wikileaks releases 500k US cables

WIKILEAKS founder Julian Assange today said the CIA was responsible for paving the way for ISIS as the whistle blowing organisation released more than half a million formerly confidential US diplomatic cables dating back to 1979.

On the sixth anniversary of the first infamous "Cablegate" by WikiLeaks, when it releases its first batch of sensitive US files, on November 28 2010, it has expanded its Public Library of US Diplomacy (PLUSD) with 531,525 new diplomatic cables from 1979.

In a statement to coincide with the release of the cables, known as "Carter Cables III", Mr Assange explained how events which unfolded in 1979, had begun a series of events that led to the rise of ISIS.

He said: "If any year could be said to be the "year zero" of our modern era, 1979 is it."

Mr Assange said a decision by the CIA, together with Saudi Arabia, to plough billions of dollars into arming the Mujahideen fighters in Afghanistan to tackle the Soviet Union, had led to the creation of terror group al-Qaeda.......

Gold jewellery worth $500,000 from Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah helped see former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton receive more lavish gifts from foreign leaders than US President Barack Obama in 2012, a new list from the State Department shows.

The King’s present included a necklace, bracelet, ring and earrings made of white gold and adorned with teardrop rubies and diamonds, the department said.

Saudi Arabia also accounted for Obama’s most expensive gift, a $16,500 gold-plated clock from Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, the Saudi defence minister.

Other standout gifts included gold, sapphire and diamond jewellery worth $58,000 given to Clinton from Brunei's queen. She also received a cashmere scarf by J Saunders worth $480 from UK’s first lady Samantha Cameron and $560 worth of cognac from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Obama received a self-autographed red, white and blue basketball from Chinese President President Xi Jinping, a customised table tennis table with US and UK designs and paddles worth $1,100 from British Prime Minister David Cameron and a sabre with a 34-inch blade and a silver filigree handle from Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj.

The president’s wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha were given a $8,000 worth of pearl and gold jewellery.

Vice-President Joe Biden also featured on the gift registry. He received a silver knife and chopsticks with silver ends from Mongolia's prime minister and a female bare-breasted bust from Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

However, most of the gifts cannot be used by the recipients. They must go to the National Archives or General Services Administration unless the politician reimburses the State Treasury the value of the present.
