If the kra canel is built..than this new port is white elephant...

the tuas port is not gg to happen for a long time. check ura master plan. there is a new variant. a mult-storey point supposedly built on a island where the ship can drive into it, and the containers are loading/ unloaded above it. the structure is easily 150-160 m high. super huge. take it as the deathstar.

You can convert it into a port for yachts and megayachts.

I thought Pinky wants to chase 10 and more billionaires to park their wealth in Singapore? This is an opportunity.

Newsflash: this is already a cesspit. Overcrowded cesspit invaded by foreigners. In fact, the idyllic lifestyle of the mythical fishing village doesn't seem too bad in comparison now.

I have no doubt it will be loss making. After all, not every country can boast of our corruption free bureaucracy and stellar investment track record now can they? You worry too much! Our government is in good hands so the kra canal can pose no trouble at all!

China is not new to invest their money in corrupt countries for strategic reasons. How much investments they have in those corrupt countries in Africa?

This whole Kra project is all about the strategic value it brings to China and there is justification for China to invest even if Thailand is corrupt to the core. 20 years ago PSA can still brag about being the busiest port in the world but nowadays they seldom blow their trumpet for Shanghai port had overtaken PSA by a convincing margin and China is keeping quiet about it. . So now we are talking about an investor willing to put their money to ensure the security of they supply line. They have the money and expertise and this will not be another Tg Pelapas.

As one bro here rightly pointed out, the Kra canal topic has always being brought up on and off for many decades....nothing ever materialize.

Many "experts" in this forum talk about money and economic benefit of the Kra canal to Thailand. You know that the Kra canal idea was first suggested during King Narai period? That was in 1677 and that was before the Chakri Dynasty?? You mean the Thais really dunno that the Kra Canal brings them lots of economic benefit? They need netizens to tell them?

Of course, during the 17 century till recent times, technology was not advance enough and the cost is high, so the idea is not implemented. But what during these few decades? Why did it not materialize? Answer is simple : The Restive South!!

As you already know, the Southern 3 Province in Thailand, Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani, are Muslim majority provinces and they speak Malay. Already these 3 provinces are crying to break away from Thailand due the their difference from the other Thais. However, and the Central Government including the Powerful Military, detest that idea.

Already there is a cultural, lingual, religion and psychological barrier separating the 3 Southern Provinces from the rest of Thailand. Now if there is a canal, it would mean that there is now a physical barriers. This will surely worsen the situation and effectively separating the South from the rest of Thailand. You can bet that the call for independence (or to join Malaysia) will be even louder.

The Thai Government and especially the Military will condone this. So Kra canal can wait long long.

You think the Military give a flying fuck about what China thinks? Come on!!

No difference. Unlike in the past, today's ships do not have to stop at Singapore with or without Kra canal. In order to do the China trade, they sail straight to Hong Kong. The simple truth is Singapore serves the Indonesian hinterland not the Chinese market. Another piece of sensationalist news by PAP IB designed to instill fear so as to vote PAP again.

Chinese shipping companies are complrtely independent of the government. There is no way the Central Government could influence shippers to use the Canal. Your over-imaginative mind will be better utilized in Jack Neo movies instead!

You must be quite daft if you think the Chinese govt will need to step in and influence shippers to use the Kra Canal. Cost savings from using a shorter route will suffice.

You see mojito is typical of those ppl that overlook everything else but just sees it as china and thinks the worst of it. Look at the map at the straits of malacca and see if you bypass it by going thru the small strait of land that is both occupied by myanmar and thailand it saves lots of time and money.

Just change the project to the USA wanting to create this canal and he would singing its praises to the skies all his logic is not true logic but biasness.

WTF now 3m is also pap ib. Let's see how do you scare voters into voting pap when the project isn't even in singapore but further up north in thailand?

Ok so how does this news actually prevent voters from voting oppo and voting pap since neither pap nor oppo can prevent the project from going ahead since they aren't even in charge of thailand.

Once upon a time policemen wore shorts and LKY had tufts of thick black hair on his head.

Times and situations change. If China has the geopolitical will to do it, nothing can stop it.
When you have as much resources as china, nothing is impossible.

Singapore dun serve Indonesian hinterland la...Sg is transhipment port....that's why if Kra canal is ever built then game over. Hk used to compete with Sg and they have china as hinterland but not anymore as china is developing shanghai and their other inland ports. Now hk and Sg no longer top only in the top 10 being pressured by Prc's growing ports.

Kra is not suez or panama....it's on a bigger scale. To even get this project off the ground there are many seemingly impossible obstacles to cross. Unlikely to happen....pap will be praying hard it won't happen.

From a macro point of view, China have their strategic considerations while Thai have their economic factors so it win-win for both. Condition like this didn't exist in the past. Thai public remain deeply polarize as proponents of the project flaunt it economic values while opponent fear that the Canal will create a physical separation from the restive southern province. The only uncertainty is the attitude of the Thai govt, whether if there is any policy continuation if a new govt is elected.
