The reliability issues were due to engine complexity as car makers bring emission down in order to comply with EU regulations on climate change and pollution.
Same as in Japan where turbo's were discarded and cars became docile from the 1990 hey days of Mitsubishi evo's and Toyota Supra turbos. And hybrids were introduced.

Turbos make engines unreliable so wat talking u? Its the Kim chees and krauts that are Turbo charging engines making them unreliable as compared to naturally aspirated engines

I had a opel before 1.2 carburettor no problem go jb go kl until i gatal modify put high performance weber carburettor then engine started overheating. It went 140 km / hr 4 speed gear box manual.

The japanese are fighting back in china with new releases from Honda, Toyota, mazda and nissan wrt EV's. They want their market share back..
Even Buick of GM coming up with EV's.
