Tiny wriggling worms found in flour that expires in December Tiny maggot-like worms found in a packet of plain flour purchased from a supermarket.

Singapore, August 13, 2013

Stomp contributor SuperWan Qash was horrified to find tiny maggot-like worms in a packet of plain flour purchased from a supermarket.

Wrote the Stomp contributor:

"On Aug 10 this year, I bought a pack of 1kg Redman Plain Flour from Giant Supermarket in Yishun.

"When I sieved the flour, I was shocked by what was left behind in my sieve.

"There were countless fine maggot-like worms!

"And they were still wriggling! Alive and well!

"When I check the flour, I can still find some smaller ones that went through the sieve.

"The expiration date is on December 2013.

"What can we do about this? It can cause food poisoning if not detected."

Which supermarket...they numbskull dare not mention...those are extra proteins..

Who is the distributor?

Phoon Huat, thye're Singapore's most complete bakery supplier. Mostly the quality of their merchandise is quite consistent. My wife buys almost all her baking needs from them. This is a rare occurrence.

Cheers!

Redman...you do not bake, do you? Phoon Huat & Company...I do not need to search I can tell you off hand...

Hainanese boss? Used to drive a Jaguar and once-upon-a-time, quite a big timer in the horse racing circuit. In the 70s, I used to drink lots of their drinks.

I can barely heat up something in my aging oven (and I can't even afford a microwave). :o

As long as it has no link to one of the several listed F&B companies, then good.

Microwaves are rubbish for baking anyway. Never liked the food that came out of it.

Yes they are still there.

At a time when NTUC is killing all the mom & pop stores. I'm surprised that they are still around.

Thanks. Used to visit the office in the past but lost touch with the people there.

NTUC only offers stuff for the general masses, whereas Phoon Huat is specialised in supplies for bakers, ingredients and equipment, right down to packaging for those who wish to do their own business in catering. They also conduct courses in cake-making and baking and I'm sure many hotels and commercial bakeries turn to them for regular supplies. Personally, I think NTUC's standard sucks, but again, their target market is to sell cheaply to the mass market.

Cheers!

Those are mealworms. They are perfectly safe for human consumption :). They are certainly no reason to boycott that brand. It happens.

Hey! Don't spread distortions, rumours, untruths, misinformation and silliness (DRUMS)! Anyone who has a packet of flour or a sack of rice with worms in it had better throw the whole damn lot away to be safe! Rice weavels excepted -- they taste great.
