Why bother to grow them when you can buy aplenty during CNY. It comes in raw or dried form and sometimes potted. Besides, Calabash is a creeping plants, you need space for them at home.

Calabash cost around a dollar to $2 depending on sizes. I am not sure if it is called cheap. During CNY you can buy them in Chinatown or major heartland supermarts. They were sold in green color (Raw?) with red ribbon tied around their "waist" or stalk for auspicious reason. I have yet to see a big one shown in the video, they usually come in rather small shape. It can be grown in tropical climate, I have seen them in nursery before but to grow them into big sizes might be a challenge if you do not know the right regime to grow them.

Quite enterprising chap. The last time I read about someone who picked up dead leaves and sold them to aquarium enthusiasts.

not alot of people doing this kind of arts ...thats why got market value ...:)

Drifter, I saw this plant recently at Changi Village.

There is a little fenced vegetable/flower garden next to the carpark as you walk towards Charlie's. You could either talk to whoever takes care of the plot for a graft (does that work?)or if you are young at heart, climb over
and curik the plant. Be careful, it is guarded by a terrocotta Ming warrior.

Good luck!

Cheers!

With such a volume, I suggest you start using google to find which Singapore distributor is the main import for calabash and than buy at a discount or do a pre-order from the owner.

I am sure they still do, and sell them overseas to aquarium hobbyist. Not many countries have Ketapang trees compared to Singapore.

Shit, I think there's only one vine. So while you're at it, might as well flick the terracotta statue too!:D

Charlies is a corner stall in the food court. It's run by his kids now. Used to be the only place with a variety of imported beers (now tons of places like that). The parking lot is behind Jordan's Pub, the strip plaza where 7-11 is. Charlies is diagonally across the parking lot from the back of Jordan's. Used to have great wings and fish & chips. Now, I dunno.

If you want that many gourds, you'll have to go to Ipoh. I believe the gourd farms there supply the handicrafts throughout M'sia including Penang. Maybe cheaper to make a few moulds and have them sandcasted? Or paper mache?

Cheers!

bro , bottle gourd is a very unique fruit . each of them have their own characteristics ..no gourd are the same ..just like human DNA . thats why its fun to work with them ( while i smoke a joint ;) ) it will be cheaper if i can collect fresh gourds washed ,and dried them up myself but it time consuming .so i dont mind paying for washed and dried ones if the pricing is reasonable .

thought of folding up my cafe and exotic pet business ( business is slow ) in tokyo and start up new business that involving arts ( i have save enough money ). and also thought of moving out of tokyo to thailand ( koh samui or koh panghan ) . i have always wanted to stay on a beautiful island doing arts . enjoying sunset and sunrise everyday with a "bong " in my hand . enough of city life .
