She started during the pandemic and now completes two to three orders each day in the evenings.

A woman, who has been working as a web designer in Singapore, took to doing part-time food delivery by bicycle during the pandemic, and has stuck to it.

Chen Zihan, 31, who is from China, has been living in Singapore for over a decade, Shin Min Daily News reported.

Her part-time stint with GrabFood has lasted several years.

She said she first signed up to carry out platform work to get a better sense of how things functioned on the ground.

Project to hobby

During the pandemic, while working as a web designer, Chen was in charge of designing a food delivery app.

She decided to sign up as a delivery rider to better understand the user experience and to help with the design process.

Her hands-on experience turned into a hobby and she has since continued doing it to this day.

Learnt cycling

Chen recounted why she started doing food delivery during the pandemic: "I spent more time working from home, so delivering food not only served as exercise, but also help me earn some pocket money."

She initially had to perform deliveries on foot as she did not know how to cycle.

It was both tiring and inefficient for Chen as she could not complete many orders.

To get better at it, she learnt how to cycle in six months to improve her efficiency.

However, she was injured when she first started delivering food on two wheels.

Once, as she was unable to manoeuvre confidently on the bike, she was pressured to make way and ended on the grass patch by an oncoming rider and she suffered scratches and bled.

For fun

Chen has now improved her skills and is able to shoot short videos of the delivery process and share them on social media.

These videos do well online as they get more views than her other content, it was reported.

She also said she usually begins taking orders after completing her web designer job in the day.

Her work as a GrabFood rider begins at around 7pm or 8pm and finishes before 9pm.

She gets to complete two or three orders each time.

"I never deliver food for money, but for fun. I like to experience different lives and find some inspiration from them," said Chen.
