The judge's just a lawyer in a different costume. I completely do not understand why people believe that a mere change of costume is going to transform a serpent lawyer into an angel. The judges' know most of the dirty stuff the lawyers are doing. They are freaking lawyers as well.

Because the law will believe the lawyer & take care of its own kind.
They cannot lose face. Iagine if the lawyer loose the case, and the party who conduct his own self defence won

Already told you...the judge's a lawyer in a different costume. Does a wolf in sheep's clothing turn it into a sheep?
And besides, in the highly unlikely event that you do get a judge that's impartial to the rich and powerful folks, your lawyer might secretly make an agreement with the other lawyer. The judge has to approve that. It's in the Rules of Court 2006.
