Armenian Street Char Kway Teow

Where did the wanton mee stall that was previously at the library go to:confused:

How about any of the wanton mee stalls at Hills Street?

Are they still around?
I don't mind looking up these older established stalls, since they have a history of providing good food:)

Actually, lard is not that unhealthy as has been claimed for years. Lard has got more unsat fats than sat fats. It is carbs that caused obesity and heart diseases and strokes, not fats, not even sat fats. Carbs induce insulin secretion which drives fat storage and accumulation. It acts on the carbs and convert them to fatty acids which become triglycerides in the fat cells. When the body needs more energy, the fat cells do not release this tri's since they are locked down, so the body "demands" for more carbs, and that's how fats get accumulated and a person becomes obese. Sat fats on the contrary, moves in and out of the fat cells storage areas easily and responds to body's calls more immediately, so the person wld not get fat or heart strokes. This is a fact already estab but after yrs of selling and vested interests in the wrong theories, physicians, health auths etc are reluctant to admit they were wrong. The Atkins diet e.g. re-establishes the truth. There's a book "Why we get fat?" and his book agve a good expose on the various schools of thought and the final right one, which is that consumption of excessive carbs causes all the obesity and heart diseases, not fats.

I know it's not healthy but the extra pork lard and the hum is the killer combination.

Nowadays the old man doesnt fry anymore. He's passed it no to the young man, whose culinary skills not as kuat as the old man.
You mean the botak old man with ah beng son?

didn't find it much tasty but suppose became institution because he had been there far too long and the only one around

I just learnt it after putting down the book. I was misled too all these years.

Haha...damned shame that you missed that. I read about it 2 years ago and gorged myself soon after, having avoided taking pork lard for many years.

Bro, don't rub it in. Already feeling screwed.

Gee, tks.

<sigh>

Hey not my fault, I highlighted that in a thread a week ago. You guys apparently missed the thread. Anyway, I stopped drinking coke and other soft drinks 20 years as those are killers.
</sigh>

Also those cookies, chips etc with high fructose corn syrup, refined starch, sugars are the worst.

Had been eating from him, then not so old man, with a very young boy, to an old man, with a son & grandchildren. That is from school days to working life, till the Armenian Street coffee shop was closed. His wife used to run a wanton mee stall next to him.

His char kway teow was good, but over the years & when his son took over , wasn't that good, but still ok. Old man(even his son) will give me, my order, even you had ordered yours, 30 minutes ago, 'members' !:D

I thought that they have retired!

Ate at Armenian Street, when days I spent at the National Library reading, or when USIS & mostly MPH for my browsing of novels or books I would buy, after reading it for some time.

The CKT is not an institution, it is a memory, a tasty memory too!. Forgot to mention the other old man 'ngoh hiang' stall, which was good, till he retired, & I think passed away. His niece took over, but lasted for a short while, the reason was, old man, handmade most of the selections.

Armenian Street would be a memory to many school boys, especially the boys school near there & the convent girls.

Armenian Street would be a memory to many

yeah right, seemed like not only me but my family members also accorded member status especially from the two brothers who ran the coffee shop

if I remember correctly, recently someone told me one of the brothers had gone to meet his maker, bless his soul

My first job was in the same bldg as MPH near to NL and American Embassy. That was where I learn to have CKT red (mostly chillies), which was introduced to me by my colleague. The Ngoh Hiang was pretty good too. Good chillies make good food betterer.:D The CKT seller also add more deep fried lard if we requested for it.

Hey, thanks for the info. Will try to get hold of the book to read.

Especially bad are those cookies using trans fats. The food industry know that people are now more health conscious that's why they try to hide the fact that they are using it:rolleyes:

High fructose corn syrup is used in many products as a cheap sweetener: pop drinks, jams, pickles, relish spreads,....

From the old schoolboys' hub of Armenian Street, I'd usually walk a bit further to McD @ YMCA for meals. I've tried the Armenian CKT and NH with my schoolmates though. Not bad but not my favorites. My favorite Chinese dish in that area was turtle soup @ Hill St. When other places were selling above $5, this elderly couple were still at $3. I'm not much into Chinese food except for soup dishes. Turtle soup isn't that common and was introduced to me by a neighbor. Fish soup and pork rib/offal soup are my other favorites and easier available. Chinese are very good with soup dishes, but the dry dishes all look too oily for me to begin with, just by looking at it.
