Tokyo Soil – Blanketed With Fukushima Radiation – Would Be Considered “Radioactive Waste” In the United States

We noted in August that some parts of Tokyo have more radiation than existed in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zones. And see this and this.

There are indications that radiation levels are increasing in Tokyo.

Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen took 5 random soil samples in Tokyo recently, and found that all 5 were so radioactive that they would be considered radioactive waste in the United States, which would have to be specially disposed of at a facility in Texas:

Indeed, shortly after the earthquake, U.S. government officials notes widespread contamination throughout northern Japan, including Tokyo, and said:

Entire region would be required to be posted as radiological area.

No wonder the potential evacuation of Tokyo has been quietly discussed by Japanese officials ever since the earthquake hit.

Keep them coming. Singaporeans have no need to be lied to by the Japanese. Singapore only takes the best from the world or the cheapest - we do not want to take the dangerous.

I am getting green tea leaves from Thailand instead.

There is very good green in SE Asia and South China. Problem is whether you can get access to them

Japanese green tea leaves sample with low radioactivity levels detected

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - A green tea leaves sample, imported from Japan and collected from a local retail outlet during surveillance, has been found to have low radioactivity levels, a spokesman for the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said today (April 3). However, there is no health concern in consuming the product concerned.

Product details are as follows:

Product name: Tokan Maruko Yabuk Ta Ban Cha (Green Tea)
Manufacturer: Ochano Maruko Co Ltd
Place of origin: Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan
Packing size: 400 grams
Best before date: July 29, 2012

"The green tea leaves sample was collected from a local supermarket for radiation testing under the regular Food Surveillance Programme last Wednesday (March 28)," the CFS spokesman said.

"The test result showed that low levels of radioactive substances, Caesium-134 (Cs-134) and Caesium-137 (Cs-137), were detected at 11 Bq/kg and 19 Bq/kg respectively. However, the detected levels did not exceed the guideline levels of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (i.e.

1,000 Bq/kg)," he added.

Dietary exposure estimation revealed that the internal dose for Cs-134 and Cs-137 from consuming tea prepared with the green tea leaves sample by even high consumers (with a daily consumption of about 14 grams of tea leaves) would not pose adverse health effects, the spokesman said.

"The total internal dose for radioactive substances of high consumers from consuming the green tea leaves sample for one year is approximately 0.0024 millisievert (mSv), far less than the radiation dose received during a chest X-ray examination (about 0.05 mSv)," the spokesman noted.

Nevertheless, as a precautionary measure, the CFS has contacted the local importer/retailer.

The vendor concerned has voluntarily suspended sale and initiated a free exchange of the affected batch of the product. A hotline has been set up at 2885 0331 to answer consumers' enquiries about the exchange arrangements during office hours.

"Consuming the tea leaves sample concerned will not result in adverse health effects. But if people are worried, they may choose not to consume the affected batch of the product," the spokesman said.

In response to the Fukushima nuclear power plant incident caused by the earthquake in Japan in March last year, the CFS has been conducting targeted radiation testing on food imported from Japan at import, wholesale and retail levels since March 12 last year.

The Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene also issued an order under section 78B of the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance (Cap. 132) on March 23 last year to prohibit import of certain fresh produce, milk, milk beverages and milk powder from five affected prefectures (Fukushima, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Chiba and Gunma) of Japan. The order is still effective.

The CFS will closely monitor information from Japan as well as the radiation testing results of Japanese food products in Hong Kong and elsewhere.

The CFS will review and adjust, if necessary, the surveillance strategy on food products imported from Japan in a timely manner, making reference to the recommendations of international authorities including the World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Sometimes I do wonder whether our AVA are doing something about ensuring our people are not consuming dangerous food and drinks. For example, there were news about Coke and Pepsi and milk products from China. There are many cheap and dangerous toys as well as medicines and sex-related enhancement drugs etc, also originating from China. We also know that most honey imported are not genuine but made from sugar and Ribena had been reported as having made false claims regarding their Vitamin C.

Yah.. the green tea leaves i consumed is from Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan as well.

Low radioactivity is not equal to NO radioactivity. Food should not have any radioactivity substance at all.

At this point i am still not happy with Japan and their business establishment who sells food product despite a danger in radiation substances in food. They downplay a lot in this part and it will get their commerce going but a damn on public health around the world. Why should we suffer on their bullshit, we don't have to.

Green tea leaves has the propensity to absorbed more radiation from its fumes.. I am taking no chances on this. Been eating that stuffs for about 1.5 to 2 months i dunno how much i have ingested in my body.

I doubt it will have much effect on your body and fortunately you stopped. I cannot say what is wrong with our authorities they are not able to detect, yet Hong Kong authorities can do it.

I bought the tea leaves from Bangkok and it is also sold in Singapore too. Thought it might be cheaper there. We have to educate ourselves on such things as it can affect our lives

Caesium has the half life of 30 years. If you get that in your body. I can assume that it will be forever in your body. How many 30 years does a human being has?

I have very bad impression of Japanese now and will boycott their food and other products.

I do not trust the local authority any more. In the past. Yes. Now, no.
The people of the sg authority has been fooling around eversince lhl become the prime minister. Even in gct time, I suspect things are slacking. It is better to educate ourselves.

The equipment tests are very straightforward and even a dog can read the figures.

Singapore is a clean and green city right? Do a bacteria count on the hawker center tables in Singapore. You tell me after that. It is not too difficult to do the bacteria count test and it is not that expensive either. NEA will pee in its pants if test results are released. You know, the test can be done by anyone from any country who comes to Singapore. Overpaying 3rd class dogs creates a serious crutch mentality and cowardice.

I am not worried about bacteria. Our body immune system can take care of it. But what about radioactive substance.

I am not sure how much radioactive substance is in my body now. And I may notbe able to live to the full extent of my life and have to put in effort to get more nutrient dense food to my body especially those that can counter radiation. When i am older, my body immune system might not be strong and the effect of radiation might kick in.
