Anything About Taiwan

Due to my interest in former president Ah Bian's case and my fondness for Taiwan variety programmes, I have been watching quite a lot of Taiwan TV recently.
This is a thread for anything about Taiwan, from entertainment to singers songwriters to food, to places of interest, even to political figures and their antics.

First a question to UncleYap who is always interested in Taiwan politics and to anyone else.
Is there a former and current Taiwan politician that you admire and why?
For me, I can't understand why the Taiwanese don't like president Ma. At least he is not corrupt and doing his best to weed out corruption.

Taiwan is a renegade province where its people are overwhelmingly unrepentant as they enegetically suck Japan's and USA's cocks.

That's all they are good for. Can their food and scenery compare to that of China?

When people talk about Chinese culture and Chinese food, they look to China, not the renegade province.

They don't like Ma cos Ma is better-looking than them and he supports reunification with China. Lee Teng-hui and Chen Shui Bian the stupid dogs before him, whore to other destructive anti-social ideologies.

But Ma Ying-Chieu still has a bit learn from the benign style of Wen Jiabao.

Taiwan is very interesting. It is a place where the software leads the hardware; an exact reverse of Singapore. I always enjoy conversations with Taiwanese and watching their TV programmes -- be it entertainment programme, current affairs report or political analytic talk-show (I stopped watching Spore TV programme).

There are a several politicians or ex-politicians that I admired but my outmost respect goes to an ex-DPP person, Shen Fu Xiong (沈富雄). An American trained renowed specialist doctor with post-doctorate qualification. He is insightful, intelligent and upright. He spent many years fighting as opposition for the democracy of Taiwan, and subsequently became a legislator (equivalent to MP or congress man) when KMT allowed for open election. Now in his 70's, he is spending time as political analyst for TVs.

You may be surprised to know that the Taiwan news have plenty of reports on world events. The recent tragic earthquake in Haiti was given a lot of coverage, and so have news items like the Thailand protests, the financial crisis, mudslide in Portugal, practically anything that Obama says or does, most things that the Japanese government say or do, global warming issues, etc etc. Not just the nightly news but also on Sissy Chen's programmes. Even the talk shows are now starting to cover world events, but they also cover Taiwan local issues and not just political ones.

The variety programmes are still very entertaining, including the food programmes, some of which cover not just Taiwan but also places like HK, Malaysia and Thailand. I especially like variety shows involving music like "Million Dollar Singing Star" hosted by Harlem and shows hosted by Jacky Wu. I know he's a prat, but he's damn funny.

I enjoy Taiwan TV immensely, but I don't totally agree with what they do, both among the politicians and citizens. I have said before that Singapore's goal for both the citizens and the political environment should be somewhere between current Singapore and current Taiwan. Current Singapore citizens are simply too apathetic and scared, current singapore government and politics is simply too one-sided, authoritarian and overbearing. On the other hand, the Taiwanese sometimes fight for causes even which they themselves may not understand, while their politicians frequently disagree just because it's said by the other party.
Same for the media. Some Taiwanese media have gone to the extent of making up stories for readership or political reasons, whereas SG media is always so careful and "obedient". A balance needs to be stuck for both countries.

I admire Shen Fu Xiong too, he is a frequent commentator on the nightly CTI talk show. He is a very fair person, says it as he sees it regardless of "colour", never afraid to speak up for the people or criticize someone important. More importantly, he is never afraid to even criticize call-in ordinary citizens who talk nonsense. You may have noticed that some analysts/commentators always criticize the government and politicians but never criticize the "ordinary people". The only small criticism I have of Mr Shen is that sometimes, he gets bogged down in the details and doesn't see or explain the big picture clearly enough. Don't forget that he spent time as a political prisoner and if I'm not wrong, he was recently recommended by the KMT(!) for a position as I think, deputy auditor general or something like that. It was not approved, perhaps because he is too dogged and just, which some people can't take!

Like all places in the world, you've to live in the place for some time to really know the place. For example, most foreigners who have come to know about Singapore through media, or perhaps spent a few days in Singapore will think that Singapore is heaven on earth. Thailand is touted as 'Land of Smiles' when in truth it's the 'Land of Lies'.

As for Taiwan, everybody is a University graduate. When Lien Chan was in power, he upgraded all the technical institutes to University status.

Frankly, most Taiwanese are pretty familiar with their own politics but clueless when it comes to world politics. The graduates these days don't even their geography well. Many will give you a blank look when you ask them for capitals of different countries. The education standard has certainly gone down.

Cohabitation is rampant in Taiwan. This is very unlike Sinkieland. It's not because Sinkieland is morally superior. It's because in Sinkieland the government will put stones in front of you so that you can't find a place to cohabit.

Taiwanese youth are useless. Don't get misguided by big brand names like ACER and ASUS. Most youngters are 'butter boys'. One of the posters above is quite right. Taiwanese look up to Japan and US. The butter boys are soft like candy, but they're being sold as 'handsome'. Girls are all after butter boys. No thanks to F4 and Farenheit boys.

I have lived in Taiwan and I think I know the place quite well.
Not everyone is a university graduate. Some of the youths are ignorant and clueless, but some are very enterprising and aware, not that much different from youths in other countries, particularly Asian countries. In fact, the youths in Taiwan are generally more aware of world affairs and able to think for themselves more than SG youths. Just my opinion.
I'm not sure if cohabitation is rampant, but you may be right that it's more common than in SG.
The youths are not useless. Some of them start working or start their own businesses successfully at avery young age, they are not as sheltered as SG and perhaps even HK youths.
But I have to agree that groups like Farenheit and F4 don't cut it for me, their songs and singing are mediocre at best, although I think that Vic Zhou (Zai Zai) is a very good actor. (better than Mark Zhao in my opinion)

Speaking of Taiwan groups, my favourites are Mayday, FIR and Wu Bai and China Blue. Fantastic groups with great songs, great singing and great bands. They are world class in my opinion, comparable with your U2s, Rolling Stones and so forth. Somehow, HK and SG just can't seem to produce world class bands, although there are some good individual singers.

Taiwan TV is pure crap. Worst I've ever seen before anywhere since I was 3 y.o. and began watching TV; still is the worst today (except for perhaps the magician Liu Qian, quite standard). I've had a Taiwanese girlfriend before, quite nice, no complain. Could have become my wife except circumstances dictate otherwise. Taiwanese girls are OK.

Taiwanese girls are known for 小象腿

劉謙 lacks the personality to become a David Copperfield.

Yes, Taiwanese TV shows are crap, especially their 偶像劇。They're trying too hard to emulate Japan, and have lost their own roots. Hom Lee and Jay Chou are two prime examples that Taiwan is on her way down.
