I read and watched documentaries detailing horror stories about the condition of car sharing vehicles. Hirers are selfish by nature since they don't own these cars. Drivers taking over such cars shared about wiping the steering wheel, dashboard and seats using light coloured cloth that turned black. Litter such as wrappers, paper, crumbs, food waste as well as sand, m&d and pet fur are routinely left behind by previous hirers/passengers.I have a hearty chuckle whenever anyone touts car-sharing as a viable alternative to car ownership. When you don't own it, you won't give a shit about it. Now multiply that by the 200 people renting the car before you. At least PHV drivers have to maintain the car somewhat because they risk their lives in that same car every day. Grab >>>>> car-sharing.
Cars that are repeatedly used by drivers who are not the owners need to be cleaned and serviced far more often. People who rent cars simply do not take care of property that doesn't belong to them. Both Tribecar and GetGo said their vehicles undergo regular maintenance at intervals recommended by the manufacturer, besides adhering to LTA’s inspection requirements.
GetGo’s Mr Toh said the company also conducts routine checks and has a system in place for users to provide real-time feedback.
Rental cars have to be cleaned after every user returns the vehicle, which is too costly for the carsharing companies. We all know how inconsiderate local hirers are when they use something that doesn't belong to them.you got valid point, but I guess if routinely clean and upkeep should be okay?
In the event of accidents, car-sharing becomes a costly affair because of an accident insurance clause that dictates excess fees. An excess on an insurance policy is the amount the hirer must pay towards the cost of a claim. After an accident with a 3rd party, car-sharing users are liable for 2 excess fees for their rented car and the 3rd-party claim. Many who rented the cars are not aware of the issue of insurance excess. The minimum deductible is $3,000. Except for major accidents, you can rest assured that the hirers will be the ones footing the bills for every minor accident. If the car rental companies are in cahoots with their panel of service workshops, the hirers will all end up as carrots.
