whatever speed those telcos promised also is bullshit.

my plan is 12mbps, starhub say 'free' upgrade to 20mbps. on a lucky day, i can get 10 to 12 mbps. sometimes even drop below 10.

never ever seen 20mbps whenever i do speedtest. not even once.

They have download speed of 200 mbps, upload 100 mbps and international 15 to 25 mbps. I do not know what it means. Isn't this the same as their current plans. Something just not right with this. Correct me is I am wrong.

Meaning you get faster speed for local contents but slower on overseas contents?

Broadband speed talk has more or less becomes an illusion to the average home user. Telco Company are trying very hard to sell you something that you don't really need.

For example. With 8mbps broadband, you can download 5 standard movies in avi format or 1 dvd format movie in an hour. In one day you can download and watch 24 full length dvd format movies!

So, why do you need higher speed, did you intend to sell the unused speed to your neighbors?

Chances are, if you experience slow response, it is highly unlikely due to the speed of your broadband if you are having 2 mbps or more. The problems are elsewhere. It is no secret our ISP international trunk have a limited outgoing and incoming submarine cables or satellite links. So they are heavily reliant on their farm of proxies/cache server to create that illusion.

If you add up all our real network speed in and out of Singapore, there are only so much it can cater to. Building an international undersea cable to carry the Internet data or launching a satellite takes time and space and are severely limited.

By upgrading our Island network infrastructure to fiber won't help you one single bit if you access International site like this forum.

To create an illusion, all ISPs deploy a farm of servers to cache your data ( example your movie ), say if 100 people downloaded the same movie, instead of having to go to the site providing the movie. This movie is cache in our ISP servers, however not all data can be cache, there are rules or other kind of setups. It's pretty complex.

What I am saying the problems are elsewhere. Speed of local network in excess of 2 mbps is just a very small variables.

I suspect the upgrade will only benefit those who have subscribed to Mio. All those TV channels must be a burden the to the old network .

Since I'm not using Mio, I don't see why I should pay for this upgrade.

Yes, I think so. But I surf mostly international content so I think it would be useless to migrate to fibre.
I suspect the fibre network is within Singapore only, the external I don't know.

yah loh, if we within ourselves is fast is useless

but if you wish to try the plan why not try starhub. the price a lot cheaper.

MaxInfinity Ultimate @ $68.27/month
100Mbps fibre broadband plan

Up to 100Mbps download speed

Up to 50Mbps upload speed

Up to 15Mbps international speed

most people do not really upload staff so i think this a more reasonable plan to most user.

on paper the singapore internet speed is pretty much same as first world country.

but in practise, the performance difference is massive.

I know because i used oversea and local before.
